Weather at the start/finish city of Leuven at 2:35 PM, local time: 21C (69F), sunny, with the wind from the north-northeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Early in the stage Matevz Govekar (Bahrain Victorious) abandoned.

Here's the report from winner Arnaud De Lie's Team Lotto:

Arnaud De Lie delivered a remarkable performance in the final stage of the Renewi Tour in Leuven, surprising everyone with a brilliant sprint to take the stage victory and the overall general classification after five days of hard racing.
“It was a very hard day as it was not my best day in this Renewi Tour,” De Lie admits after the finish. “At the bonifications, Mathieu Van der Poel wins the sprint and I become third. At that point I knew that things would not become easy. But in those situations, staying calm is the most important thing.”

Despite the pressure, De Lie kept his composure and made the decisive move in the final sprint. “I took a gamble and it worked out in my favor today,” he explained. “I knew that I had to await the sprint and I knew that Pavel Bittner does good sprints. So I decided to go for his wheel. I am glad that I followed him", he smiles.

Here's another shot of Arnaud De Lie winning the stage.

The victory carries even greater significance given the challenges Arnaud has faced in recent months. For him, this win was not only about results. “Especially after a difficult period, a stage win was one of my main goals. But now I won a stage and the general classification, right in front of Mathieu Van der Poel, who is one of the biggest cyclists there currently is.”

Anaud De Lie was also quick to share the credit with his teammates, who worked tirelessly to support him throughout the week. “This win is one for the team as well,” he emphasized. “It’s hard when you keep finishing second. The team always works extremely hard, so it feels very good to finally give the right recognition to everyone.”

Story of the Giro d'Italia, volume 1

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 1: 1909 - 1970 is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Bilzen-Hoeselt at 2:30 PM, local time: 19C (66F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the northwest at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is a 4% chance of rain.

The race: Fabio Jakobsen (Team Picnic-PostNL) crashed early in the stage and broke his collarbone.

Here's the report from stage winner Tim Merlier's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Tim Merlier cemented his status as the most successful sprinter of the season after his 14th win of the year, at the end of the Renewi Tour’s penultimate stage. Victorious also on the opening day, the European Champion produced another sprint and making the Renewi Tour his fifth different stage race of the season with multiple wins, after the AlUla Tour, UAE Tour, Tour of Belgium and Tour de France.

Once the catch was made, thanks also to a phenomenal effort of former Belgian Champion Yves Lampaert, things once again became hectic in the peloton, as the fast men were trying to find some space before the uphill drag to the line. Around 500 meters from the finish, Merlier found himself a bit boxed in, but he expertly found an opening on the right side of the road, got himself in the perfect slot and opened the sprint with 200 meters to go.

That sensational burst of speed sent Merlier across the line arms aloft as he celebrated his 40th victory for the team, the Belgian becoming the sixth different rider to have reached this remarkable milestone in the Soudal Quick-Step jersey.

“It was a difficult finish, but I am delighted I could pull it off. I started from the distance and felt I could keep the speed all the way to the line. The team did another great effort, and it was thanks to them that we had a bunch sprint today, as the breakaway was dangerous and made the peloton work hard. I’m happy with my 40th victory as a Soudal Quick-Step rider, it’s something I am proud of. We have two stage victories here, but are motivated to give our best also on the final day of the race”, Tim said after Saturday’s win.

Weather at at the finish city of Geraardsbergen at 2:10 PM, local time: 19C (67F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the northwest at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 2% chance of rain.

The race: Ben Turner (INEOS Grenadiers) did not start. Early in the stage Tim Declarcq, feeling ill, abandoned. Alexis Renard (Cofidis) also abandoned.

Here's the report from second-place Arnaud De Lie's Team Lotto:

What a battle. Arnaud De Lie finished second on the Vesten in Geraardsbergen in the queen stage of the Renewi Tour. “I was completely spent, but losing to Mathieu Van der Poel is no disgrace.”

He won the stage to Geraardsbergen last year, so Arnaud De Lie was determined to repeat that performance this year. That planned scenario seemed to be on track for a long time, with a thrilling finale in which De Lie, together with Mathieu Van der Poel and Tim Wellens, took center stage. It wasn’t until the Vesten that Arnaud De Lie had to concede in the sprint against Van der Poel. “A victory is always better, of course, but I was up against two champions, two big engines... I went all out in the last lap. My heart rate was through the roof,” De Lie said. “Nikolas (Maes, team director, ed.) told me through my earpiece that I had to start thinking about my sprint. I knew I had to stay calm until the first time up the Muur. I tried to make it difficult for the other two and play it smart, but I just didn’t have the freshness left to do that.”

“The goal today was to jump for the win, and I did that. In the end, I was too far back, I realize that. But against Mathieu Van der Poel, it’s always difficult. This was the maximum achievable. The good feeling after the Tour is still there, my legs feel great, and I rode a beautiful race.”

De Lie also takes the lead in the general classification. He now has a 1-second advantage over Van der Poel. “Since the first stage, I’ve genuinely felt good. One second isn’t much, but it could be enough. There are still two tough stages to come. Tomorrow and in Leuven, I need to pick up some bonus seconds. I know Sunday’s course- it’s really tough- but we’ll do everything we can to defend that jersey.”

Weather at the finish city of Ardooie at 2:15 PM, local time: 21C (71F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the north at 21 km/hr (14 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Connor Swift (INEOS Grenadiers) & Mathias Norsgaard (Movistar) did not start.

Here's the report from stage winner Olav Kooij's Team Visma | Lease a Bike:

Olav Kooij powered to an emphatic win in stage two of the Renewi Tour. On a day shaped by strong winds, the Dutchman proved by far the fastest in the final sprint. His victory delivered Team Visma | Lease a Bike its 29th win of the season.

“We did a really good job as a team,” Kooij reflected afterwards. “Maybe we hit the front a little too early, but it allowed me to start the sprint from a great position. I was able to find my way in the final kilometer, and luckily I still had enough power in the legs. After not being able to sprint properly yesterday because of the crash, it feels great to take the win today.”

After a calm opening, the race came alive with 60 kilometers to go, when the fierce wind split the peloton in two. Edoardo Affini and Julien Vermote held their ground in the first group, but ultimately the split did not prove decisive.

With 35 kilometers remaining, the bunch came back together. In a spectacular finale, where the peloton split several times, a large group still reached the streets of Ardooie together. In the final kilometer, Kooij was expertly launched by his teammates before sprinting convincingly to victory.

For the 23-year-old Dutchman, this is not only his seventh win of the season, but also a first stage victory in the Renewi Tour. “Winning a stage here has always been on my list, so it’s extra special to finally do it. I’m really happy to get this win today and I’m looking forward to the next days.”

Weather at the finish town of Breskens at 2:05 PM, local time: 21C (68F), fair, with the wind from the north at 26 km/hr (16 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Tim Merlier's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Tim Merlier took another crushing sprint victory in his first road race since the Tour de France, earning Soudal Quick-Step’s 33rd success of the season in Breskens, where the opening stage of the Renewi Tour – the 31st World Tour event of the season – concluded.

It was a hectic day of racing, with the original seven-man breakaway caught long before the finish and another leading group formed soon afterwards, with some help from the crosswinds. Our team had Tour de Pologne stage winner Paul Magnier there, a move which put the pressure on other squads, who had to chase hard in order to bring them back, which eventually happened only inside the final ten kilometers.

Soudal Quick-Step once again took over the reins in the bunch and stretched the peloton before Bert Van Lerberghe pushed a big tempo under the flamme rouge, paving the way for Merlier’s sprint. The European Champion flew to victory, putting a bike length into his opponents and taking a success that brought him the race’s first leader’s jersey and ten bonus seconds.

“I had a good feeling the entire day, which made me confident in my chances, but we weren’t sure there was going to be a bunch sprint because the breakaway was a strong one. On the other hand, it still was a good situation for us, as we had Paul there. In the end, it all came together and the team did a really good job to put me in a good position, from where I could open my sprint in the right moment like I wanted. It makes me happy I could win in my first race since July”, said Tim, who also leads the points classification of the Renewi Tour.
