Weather at the start/finish city of Brussels at 2:30 PM, local time: 25C (77F), showers in the vicinity, with the wind from the west at 16 km/hr (10 mph). There is a 65% chance of rain, dropping to 1% at 4:00 PM.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Tim Merlier's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Sunday was a big day for Tim Merlier. The fastest man in the sport took again the spoils at the Tour of Belgium on the final day of the competition, just like last year, racking up his tenth victory of the season – the first sprinter to go into double-digits since the start of the season. On top of that, the win in Brussels was Merlier’s 60th in the pro ranks, which cemented his position as one of the most successful riders in the current peloton.

“It’s a great way to conclude our week here in Belgium! My teammates did a great job, making sure I was where I needed to be going into the final kilometers, and this helped me enter the last corner in third position, which was ideal to open the sprint. I’m really happy to finish the Tour of Belgium with a victory, my tenth of the season and the 60th of my career. These are some nice numbers, and it makes me proud that I have such a fantastic team to help me reach these milestones. This win is good for the confidence, as I continue to work towards the Tour de France”, said Tim, whose success in the capital was again a comfortable one.

The start line. That's Greg Van Avermaet (winner of Paris-Roubaix, Gent-Wevelgem, Olympic Road Race, etc.) with the start flag.

The week ended up being a memorable one also for Ethan Hayter. The 26-year-old finished first in the time trial after a superb ride, scoring his first victory in two years, and concluded the race second in the overall classification, which made him the first Brit in the last 36 years to be on the Tour of Belgium podium.

“It’s been a superb race for us and I’m very happy! We took three wins in what has been one of our most successful races of the season and I’m proud I could play a part in this. Getting that victory in the time trial was great, an important boost for morale after a hard start to the year. I hope things won’t stop here and I will get some more good results for the team”, Ethan said after the podium ceremony in Brussels.

Bicycle History

Weather at the start/finish city of Durbuy at 3:00 PM, local time: 30C (86F), sunny, with the wind from the southeast at 13 km/hr (8 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Thibau Nys & Tim Declercq (both Lidl-Trek) did not start. Both fell sick overnight with gastrointestinal trouble.

Here's the stage four report from new GC leader Filippo Baroncini's UAE Team Emirates-XRG:

Filippo Baroncini has seized the violet leader’s jersey at the Baloise Belgium Tour following Stage 4, a 173 km hilly circuit through the Ardennes. While Stage 4 honours went to Jenno Berckmoes (Lotto), Baroncini delivered a strong, consistent performance—picking up bonus seconds and securing enough time to top the general classification by the margin of 4” heading into tomorrow’s final stage.

Baroncini: “I’m very happy with the result today, taking the lead in the GC is a big step. Tomorrow we will go all-in to defend it. All day the pace was high and with two laps to go I found the opportunity to move away in a group of twenty riders which later became four. I was focussed on taking the bonus seconds and also I ended up doing a lot of the work as I was the highest in the GC. In the last 2km I pulled all the way to the line so to take the stage also would have been difficult. But it feels nice to be leading and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

Friday, June 20: Stage 3, Tessenderlo-Ham 9.7 km individual time trial

Weather at the start/finish city of Tessenderlo-Ham at 2:30 PM, local time: 26C (79F), fair, with the wind from the east-northeast at 13 km/hr (8 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and GC leader Ethan Hayter's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Ethan Hayter produced a flawless ride on the third stage of the race, an almost flat 9.7km individual time trial between Tessenderlo and Ham, to take his maiden win since joining Soudal Quick-Step at the beginning of the year.

Former national champion of the discipline, the Brit averaged a whooping 55.46km/h and stopped the clock in 10:29, a result that put him into the hot seat, where he stayed for close to two hours. In the end, Hayter had a margin of four seconds on runner-up Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) and moved into the leader’s jersey ahead of Saturday’s hilly stage around Durbuy.

“It feels great to get my first win of the season! It wasn’t the easiest start to the year, but the team has been patient with me and I’m happy I could repay them for their confidence and amazing support. I liked this parcours, it was a really nice one and I enjoyed it. I felt good out there, the most nervous part was waiting in the hot seat until everybody finished.”

“As soon as I left the start ramp, I just went full gas out there and I’m delighted with my time and with being at the top of the general classification. A special mention to our technical partners: Specialized, for providing me the best bike there is, and Castelli, whose new CDN Time Trial suit was perfect. Together, they made the difference today. Now we will try to defend the jersey and do our best to keep it after Saturday’s stage, before shifting our attention again to helping Tim on the last day of the race”, Ethan said after signing off Soudal Quick-Step’s 20th success of the year.

Weather at the finish city of Putte at 2:35 PM, local time: 26C (79F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from third-place Jenno Berckmoes' Team Lotto:

Stage two of the Baloise Belgium Tour saw a great performance from our riders, with Jenno Berckmoes powering to a strong third place. Close behind, Steffen De Schuyteneer crossed the line in eighth. “I am really happy with the teamwork that we showed today”, Jenno says confidently.

It was again a warm day on the roads in Belgium but our guys showed true teamwork, resulting in two top ten places for our team. Jenno Berckmoes sprinted towards a strong third place and Steffen De Schuyteneer worked himself to a solid eight place. "I am really happy with the teamwork we showed today. It gave the whole team a boost.” Jenno says confidently.

Jenno’s third place also propelled him into fourth place in the General Classification - an exciting but challenging position heading into the next challenge. Up next is a 9.7 km time trial through Tessenderlo-Ham.

Stage 1 map & profile

Tim Merlier wins stage one.

Sticky Buns Across America

Les Woodland's book Sticky Buns Across America: Back-roads biking from sea to shining sea is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Knokke-Heist at 2:10 PM, local time: 20C (68F), sunny, with the wind from the north at 16 km/hr (10 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Atem Schmidt (INEOS Grenadiers) & Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X obility) did not start.

Here's the report from stage winner Tim Merlier's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

Tim Merlier took a crushing sprint victory on the opening day of the race, after producing a massive acceleration on the uphill finish in Knokke-Heist, which helped him put several bike lengths into his opponents. It was his second success of the month, ten days from the one he got in Brussels Cycling Classic, another race where the Belgian was in a league of his own.

By far the most successful sprinter of the season, with eight wins to his name before Wednesday, Merlier benefitted from another flawless effort of his Soudal Quick-Step teammates, who controlled the escapees, brought them back and neutralized the late attacks before positioning him for the finale. There, the European Champion started his sprint from the distance, but even so, nobody could get close to him and Tim took a comfortable victory that brought him the race’s first leader’s jersey.

“I started the sprint a bit too early, but I had the power to keep it all the way until the finish line. It’s my ninth win of the season and it makes me happy, also because we can enjoy this perfect start to the Tour of Belgium. It’s a good result for the confidence and we’ll continue to work in the same direction in the coming stages, because there will be some more opportunities to leave our mark on the race and we are looking forward to it”, a delighted Tim said after his 35th success in the Soudal Quick-Step jersey.
