Weather at the finish city of Cattolica at 1:25 PM, local time: 20C (68F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the west (tailwind) at 21 km/hr (13 mph). At 3:00 PM there is at 40% chance of rain, which drops to just 7% by 5:00. There is also the possibility of strong wind gusts.

The race: All 183 stage four finishers began today's stage at 1:23. There was one abandon, Mikel Landa of the Bahrain Victorious team.

Stage 5 start

The riders begin stage five from Modena, home of Ferrari, De Tomaso and Maserati.

Fourth-place Peter Sagan's Bora-hansgrohe team sent me this report:

Cycling's 50 Triumphs and Tragedies

Day 5 of the Giro d’Italia was almost entirely flat and almost entirely straight. The 177km parcours barely rose more than 200m over its distance, and running alongside the motorway, the only twists and turns took place on the streets of Cattolica on the Adriatic coast, where the stage was predicted to end with a sprint.

After the successes of the breaks over the race so far, the peloton was reluctant to let a large group go out, and so when a duo went off the front, the bunch was content to allow them to escape. With a 3:30 lead early on, the sprint teams were confident of pulling them back before the finish, even letting this advantage extend to more than five minutes. A massive increase in pace saw the break caught by the final 100km, only for another break to go out with less than 70km remaining, however, the peloton kept this trio in close contact, barely allowing them more than a minute. The BORA-hansgrohe riders were working to protect Peter Sagan, Felix Grossschartner and Daniel Oss working to make sure the Slovak rider was safe, staying ahead of a crash on a tight ride hand bend, before pulling hard to draw in the break, making the catch with 3km to go.

Heading up the peloton to lead in Peter, Daniel peeled off with a few hundred metres left. In a chaotic finale, Peter picked his line and sprinted hard, working his way through the slower lead-out riders of other teams, but he was just off the pace, taking fourth in a hotly-contested finish. With crashes in the closing kilometres, the whole BORA-hansgrohe team came in safe with the main bunch, ready to fight another day.

"As expected, it was a day for the pure sprinters with quite technical and tricky final kilometres. The team did again an excellent job, Felix and Daniel were brilliant in the last kilometre. I was in a good position and had a strong pace when I was getting ready for the final push but the rider in front of me slowed down, so I didn't have the best speed in the final meters." – Peter Sagan

"Today was a textbook stage for sprinters, so it was clear that all the teams with such a goal would also work to ensure we had a bunch sprint finish. There were very strong crosswinds around the middle of the stage but that didn't affect the race, so in the end, all was set for a fast finish in the final and tricky part on the coast. Our focus was Peter, so the team was there to support him but also make sure that Emu stayed safe, avoided any crashes or loss of time. Peter was in an excellent position in the final kilometre, Felix and Daniel did a great job in positioning him. He was in third place when he was about to launch his sprint but slowed down a bit and took fourth on the line." – Jan Valach, Sports Director
