Filppo Ganna

Filippo Ganna on his way to becoming the first Maglia Rosa of the 2021 Giro d'Italia

Weather at Torino at 1:55 PM, loal time: 19C (67F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the east at 6 km/hr (4 mph). No rain is forecast.

Plato's Apology

The race: Here's the report from winner Filippo Ganna's INEOS Grenadiers team:

Filippo Ganna made sure the Giro d'Italia got off to a perfect start for the Grenadiers with victory in the opening time trial.

The Italian was unbeatable on the streets of Turin, setting a blistering pace to go 10 seconds quicker than anyone else in the short opening stage.

The result saw Ganna mirror his result from the 2020 edition, pulling on the maglia rosa to kick-start the event in style.

Egan Bernal and Pavel Sivakov also got their general classification challenges off to a good start, slotting in amongst the overall contenders after an early chance to open up the legs. Sivakov was 32nd on the day, with Bernal 40th.

Gianni Moscon set a very impressive 10th fastest time, while Jonathan Castroviejo was the fastest of the early runners, eventually finishing 13th on the time sheets.

Filippo Tagliani

Filippo Tagliani (Androni Giocattoli) gets ready to be the first rider to roll out of the starthouse.

Filippo Ganna:
"It felt like a long time waiting in the hot seat for the stage to finish. But I’m here and I’m really happy.

"Now we look ahead to tomorrow and to recover well. It’s just the start of the Giro and this Giro is really hard.

"The radio was not working much. So I said ‘Filippo, go full gas’, listening to the people at the side of the road. I was able to arrive with this amazing victory.

"After Romandie, my power was not so high. Now it’s back and I’m really happy."

Egan Bernal:
"I felt really good. The feeling I had was a nice feeling. We will see after all the times but it is just the start. I’m really happy to be here. We will see how we are in the next stages.

"We are not the specialists so for sure we need to think that we will lose some time in the TTs. We just try to go full gas and try to recover some time in the climbs."

Pavel Sivakov:
"I’m a bit disappointed and of course you always want to do better. But it’s also not catastrophic. I think I was a bit too careful in the corners, even though I did the recon two times. When you go full gas in the race it’s always different. There are of course some guys who will gain time on me on GC, but it’s not like they are gaining minutes, it’s only seconds.

"We know the Giro is an unpredictable race. For me from a TT perspective the last one will be much more important and it suits me better. It’s good to get going and we’ll see what the rest of the race brings."

Complete Results & GC:

8.6 kilometers raced at an average speed of 58.748 km/hr. This was the third fastest Giro ITT, behind Ganna's own 2020 ride and the fastest ever, Rik Verbrugghe's 2001 58.874 km/hr
