Tour de France: the Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Tour de France: The Inside Story - Making the World's Greatest Bicycle Race is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

The race:

The Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré, along with the Tour of Switzerland, is an important pre-Tour de France race. Held in June, it is often used as a final training tune-up by Tour contenders. Run in the Dauphiné region of France, the week-long race often features many of the same Alpine climbs used in the upcoming Tour. Recent editions have been so fiercely fought that the winner is sometimes still tired and uncompetitive in the Tour.

In recent years the race was jointly organized by the Dauphiné Libéré newspaper and ASO, the owners of the Tour de France. In 2010 ASO completely took over the race and renamed it the Critérium du Dauphiné.

It is the only race that has been won by all the 5-time Tour de France winners.
