Sunday, February 16: 4th & Final Stage, Avignon - Aix en Provence, 170.5 km

Owain Doull

Owain Doull takes the final stage in front of Matthias Brandle.

Weather at the finish city of Aix-en-Provence at 2:00 PM, local time: 13C (56F), cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Owain Doull's Team INEOS.

Story of the Tour de France Volume 2

Owain Doull took an impressive and perfectly measured victory from the breakaway on the final stage of the Tour de La Provence.

The Welshman found himself in a four-man group which held a strong advantage heading into the latter part of the race.

With a number of pure sprinters dropped behind, the peloton were narrowly unable to reel in the quartet, with Doull playing it cool to win the sprint into Aix-en-Provence.

The peloton arrived just six seconds later, with Eddie Dunbar able to seal sixth place overall.

The result was just reward for an attacking performance on the final day. Ian Stannard, Gianni Moscon and Pavel Sivakov had all tried to force their way into breakaway moves before Doull finally put himself in position.

Owain Doull:
"It was a hard day and we worked together really well as a four. I was quite confident with the finish and I knew most of the guys, and I had good legs so I was quite happy to wait for the sprint.

"Around the 30km (to go) mark when we still had around four minutes I thought we had a chance. If we stayed together on the climb, I knew the run-in from last year was really fast. If we stayed as a group and rotated fast I knew we’d have a chance. With around 2 or 3km to go I knew we’d stay away – then it starts to get a bit tactical and thinking about the sprint.

"This is my first professional win in Europe. I’ve won one race before in Australia. It’s nice to get the team’s first win of the year and it’s a good sign before the Classics."

Saturday, February 15: Stage 3, Istres - Mont Ventoux/Chalet Reynard, 140.2 km

Nairo Quintana

Sticky Buns Across America

Weather at Carpentras, 20 km from Mt Ventoux at 2:20 PM, local time: 16C (61F), sunny, with the wind from the southwest at 10 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Alexey Lutsenko's Team Astana.

The iconic Mont Ventoux awaited the peloton on the penultimate stage of the Tour de la Provence today. As expected, the race went on fire as the riders tackled the steep last ascent.

Alexey Lutsenko and Aleksandr Vlasov showed a strong performance, staying in the first chasing group and crossing the line in second and fourth place.

Aleksandr Vlasov

Stage 3 took the peloton from Istres over 140 short but challenging kilometers up to the iconic climb Mont Ventoux, at the Chalet Reynard. Astana Pro Team, with the overall leader Aleksandr Vlasov in their ranks, wanted to achieve another great result.

Right from the start, a group of riders launched an attack and pulled away. After some kilometers of racing, the breakaway of the day had more than four minutes gap. Astana stayed in the peloton, protecting their leader Aleksandr Vlasov.

Nairo Quintana

Around 45 kilometers before the finish line, a soloist distanced himself from his former breakaway companions and opened an advantage of more than two minutes. Meanwhile in the peloton, Astana was setting the pace.

On the last ascent up to the finish, the race fell apart, as the soloist was caught, another rider launched an attack and was able to build a small gap. The whole Kazakh team put in again a strong effort, Alexey Lutsenko and Aleksandr Vlasov managed to ride in the first chasing group, only some seconds behind the soloist, Nairo Quintana. The steep climb took its toll and many riders lost contact to the chasers, not so Alexey Lutsenko and Aleksandr Vlasov. Both Astana riders showed a strong performance, but Nairo Quintana was able to hold the gap and took the stage win. The Kazakh champion crossed the line in a strong second place, followed by his teammate, who took fourth.

Alexey Lutsenko

Following this result, Vlasov now ranks second and Lutsenko third in the overall ranking, one minute behind the new leader Quintana. The Russian champion still leads the sprint and youth classification. Astana Pro Team also leads the team classification of the Tour de la Provence. Tomorrow, the final stage of the Tour de la Provence will take the riders from Avignon to Aix-en-Provence over 170.5 kilometers.

Nairo Quintana

- It was a good race for us, the team worked once again very well together. We tried to defend the jersey, but Quintana was really strong today on the final climb. Nevertheless, we finished in second and fourth place. And we are now going into tomorrow’s stage in second and third place in the overall ranking and will give our best to achieve another good result. Also, congrats to our team in Murcia for the amazing win and second place. – Dmitriy Fofonov

- I am satisfied with my result today. The whole stage we stayed in the bunch and saved the energy for the final climb and as we headed onto the final climb I worked for Aleksandr. We both finished inside the Top 5 and tomorrow we have the final stage here in the Provence. - Alexey Lutsenko

Friday, February 14: Stage 2, Aubagne - La Ciotat, 175 km

Aleksandr Vlasov

Aleksandr Vlasov finishes alone. His nearest chaser is nearly a half-minute back. Sirotti photo

Weather at the finish city of La Ciotat at 1:20 PM, local time: 16C (60F), sunny, with the wind from the northwest at 42 km/hr (25 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Aleksandr Vlasov's Team Astana.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

A demanding 175km long stage with a sharp climb up to the finish line was on today’s menu at the Tour de la Provence. It all came down to the last ascent as several riders tried to distance themselves, but in the end, it was Aleksandr Vlasov, who launched a late attack and rode solo to glory. Lutsenko made the team’s result even better with taking third place on La Ciotat.

On today’s Valentine’s Day the peloton had to cover 175km from Aubagne up to La Ciotat including four demanding climbs and a total ascent of 2700m in climbing.

From the drop of the flag, the day’s breakaway formed as a trio went up the road. The escapees built up an advantage of several minutes over the pack, where Astana took over control of the pace together with two other teams.

The Kazakh team put in a strong effort to decrease the gap of the break, setting up for an attack on the last steep ascent. The gap was around two minutes as the race started to tackle the second last climb of the day, however the trio was caught with 23km to go, on the top of the penultimate ascent.

Tour of Proence

The stage went through some steep, hilly country. Sirotti photo

The race headed onto the final climb of the day, a steady 4,7km long and 7% steep climb, as several riders tried to attack. The Astana riders stayed in a good position at the front of the reduced bunch, waiting for the final kilometers to launch an attack. As two riders tried to go clear, Aleksandr Vlasov managed to bridge across and increased the pace. The Russian champion was able to distance himself from the pack. In a masterpiece of cycling, the young rider rode solo to glory, taking the team’s first victory of the season. Alexey Lutsenko made the team’s effort even more perfect by taking third place.

- I am so happy with this stage win. It is my first season with Astana and therefore the win now is something really special for me. We were together on the climb to protect Lutsenko, and as the two guys attacked I bridge across to close the gap and then, as I saw I had a gap I just went full gas. To now be wearing now the leader’s jersey is really great, I am so happy. I also want to say thank you to my team for the trust they gave me. Of course, we will try to do our best in the upcoming days to keep the jersey. – Aleksandr Vlasov

With this stage win, Vlasov now leads three classifications, the general, sprint and the youth classification of the Tour de la Provence.

- It was a really good day for us. What we planned worked out, the guys followed our instructions. They worked very well at the front of the peloton, put in a strong effort the whole day. Today the teamwork was on point. Also, the attack with Vlasov at the end and the control in the back with Lutsenko and Aranburu worked out perfectly. For the first race with young and new riders, I think we are really on a good way. Tomorrow the Mont Ventoux is waiting and Vlasov is a good climber, so we will give our best. I am really happy with the victory and congrats to the whole team for today’s effort. – said Dmitriy Fofonov

Tomorrow the third stage will take the peloton up to the Mount Ventoux/Chalet Reynard. A 140km tough stage starting in Istres, with Vlasov in the leader’s jersey.

Thursday, February 13: Stage 1, Chateaurenard - Saintes Maries de la Mer, 149 km

Nacer Bouhanni

Nacer Bouhanni is the day's fastest rider. Sirotti photo

Weather at the finish city of Saintes Maries de la Mer at 1:40 PM, local time: 13C (55F), cloudy, with the wind from the east-southeast at 13 km/hr (8 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Jakub Mareczko's CCC Team.

Cycling's World Championships

In a nail-biting finish to Tour de la Provence stage one, Jakub Mareczko showed his strength and speed racing to a solid second place after a dominant performance in the bunch sprint saw him, unfortunately, nudged off the top step of the podium in the final moments of the day.

Mareczko looked powerful in the closing meters of the race and had everyone on the edge of the seats as he took control of the sprint with 200 meters to go, surging around the final left-hand bend towards the line in a move that looked unstoppable.

In the end, only Nacer Bouhanni (Team Arkea Samsic) had the necessary speed to stop CCC Team’s sprinter from securing his first victory for the Polish WorldTeam, narrowly coming around Mareczko on the line to push him into second place.

The peloton was confident that it could bring the race back together in time for the predicted fast and furious finish and as a result, the day’s early four-rider breakaway, which allowed a maximum advantage of just three minutes 30 seconds on the day’s only categorized climb, was reeled in on the coastal finishing circuit with less than ten kilometers to go.

The exposed roads on the 23.6-kilometer lap saw the wind creating tough and hectic conditions but, after sticking together in the bunch all day, CCC Team was able to rally around Mareczko with Jonas Koch key role, keeping the Italian in his wheel during the messy run back into town and giving him the springboard to push off from to move up through the field before launching his impressive sprint.

Jakub Mareczko:
“It was disappointing to get so close to the win today and then just miss out at the last moment but I’m happy to see my legs are good. I want to say a big thank you to my teammates for their hard work today. It was a pretty straightforward day and we stuck together in the bunch for most of it before, in the end, they gave 100% to help me. Although it’s a shame I missed out on the win, this result has really given me some good motivation and I’m looking forward to the next sprint.”

Sports Director, Gabriele Missaglia:
“The guys did a perfect job today, we just missed out on the win to really finish off their work. However, I am really happy with everybody. The guys followed our plan to the letter, sticking all together in the group for the whole day. It was an easy stage but really fast and in the final, it was important that Jonas Koch was there for Jakub. He did a really great job and he brought Jakub into the best position possible for the sprint. If you don’t try to win, you can never win so overall we can be pleased with the work we did. Tomorrow is another day so we will see what we can do and hope we can continue to race like this and keep looking for the win.”
