Weather at the start/finish city of Waalwijk at 2:55 PM, local time: 23C (74F), cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 14 km/hr (9 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage five report.

Lidl-Trek’s 24-year-old Czech rider Mathias Vacek was crowned the overall winner of the ZLM Tour in Waalwijk. After five days of racing, his teammate Max Walscheid and Euskaltel-Euskadi’s Axel van der Tuuk joined him on the final podium in second and third place. Henry Hobbs won the final stage. The 19-year-old Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider defeated Lidl-Trek’s Max Walscheid and BEAT CC’s David Dekker in the streets of Waalwijk.

Six riders launch an early attack
The riders clearly had attacking intentions in the final stage around Waalwijk. Roan Konings (METEC-Solarwatt p/b Mantel), Rick Ottema (EEW-VDK Cycling Team), Mees Vlot (Team Picnic PostNL), Tars Poelvoorde (Lotto-Intermarché), Artuur Torney (Team Flanders-Baloise) and Oliver Knudsen (SWAT Club) broke away early in the stage.

They were able to dream of the stage victory for a long time, but on this occasion the peloton caught the escapees just in time. Led by Team Visma | Lease a Bike, Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe and Lidl-Trek, the peloton closed the final gap.

Hobbs surprises the fast men
Henry Hobbs produced a surprise in the final sprint by proving to be the fastest rider. “The team worked hard for me all day, so it is amazing to win here,” said the young Brit. “I did not expect to beat all those fast riders, but I am incredibly happy with this victory.”

Vacek caps off a strong ZLM Tour with overall victory
Mathias Vacek’s yellow ZLM leader’s jersey was never in danger during the final stage. The 24-year-old Czech received the winner’s trophy with a broad smile. “I mainly came here for the time trial, but winning the general classification is of course amazing as well,” said Vacek. “As a team, we can look back on a successful ZLM Tour. I would be delighted to return in the future.”

Lidl-Trek wins the team classification

Roan Konings received the award for the most combative rider, while Lidl-Trek was crowned the winner of the team classification.

Saturday, September 5: Stage 4, Schijndel - Schijndel, 210.2 km

Stage 4 map & profile

Lionel Taminiaux wins stage four.

Bill & Carol McGann’s book The Story of the 2024 Tour de France: The Happy Warrior Triumphs is available print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Schijndel at 2:35 PM, local time: 21C (69F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 21 km/hr (13 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Sébastien Grignard (Lotto-Intermarché) did not start. Early in the stage Rak van der Wal (EEW-VDK Cyclingteam) abandoned. Later Karst Hayma (Metec-SOLARWATT-Mantel) also quit the race.

Here's the report from stage winner Lionel Taminiaux's Team Lotto-Intermarché:

Lionel Taminiaux has delivered Lotto-Intermarché a fine victory in the ZLM Tour. The 29-year-old Belgian was part of the early breakaway in stage four, which managed to stay clear all the way to the finish after spending 180 kilometres at the front. In a thrilling finale, Taminiaux finished off the job with a powerful sprint. “We worked perfectly together at the front, but I really had to fight and sprint all the way to the line. That makes this victory even more special,” says Taminiaux.

When Lionel Taminiaux initiated the breakaway of the day after 25 kilometres of racing, he certainly did not expect to cross the finish line first four and a half hours later. “There was a lot of wind and our advantage never exceeded a minute and a half throughout the race,” Taminiaux explains. “The five of us worked well together, but we expected the classic breakaway scenario, with the peloton catching us in the finale. However, because of the nature of the tricky local circuit, with climbs and narrow roads, it was difficult for the peloton to make up much ground. That was when we started to realise that something might actually be possible. With 50 kilometres to go, there were four of us left and we started to increase the pace. The cooperation was absolutely perfect until 700 metres from the finish. We kept rotating constantly, with everyone doing their share. I really have to thank the other guys for that. Everyone kept fully committing to our chance. Of course, I still had the opening stage of the Renewi Tour in the back of my mind. I let an opportunity slip away deep into the finale there, and I had learned my lesson.”

Taminiaux entered the final corner in first position, but then saw fellow escapee Danny van der Tuuk accelerate from behind. “Martijn Rasenberg immediately managed to get onto his wheel, while I suddenly had to close a gap of 50 metres. With 500 metres to go, Rasenberg launched his sprint. I was sprinting just as fast as him but wasn’t getting any closer… until he sat down for a moment. That allowed me to pass him with 20 metres to go. I knew my form was good and I think I played it well tactically. It certainly wasn’t an easy victory: I really had to fight and sprint all the way to the line. To be able to finish it off with a win makes it even more satisfying.”

Weather at the finish city of Bergen op Zoom at 2:35 PM, local time: 20C (68F), showers in the vicinity, with the wind from the west at 35 km/hr (22 mph). The showers are forecast to end at 3:30 PM.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Max Walscheid's Team Lidl-Trek:

Lidl-Trek continue their winning streak at ZLM Tour: after Mathias Vacek on stage one and two, Max Walscheid took the glory on stage three

Max Walscheid won the third stage of the ZLM Tour in Bergen op Zoom, continuing Lidl-Trek’s winning streak.

After Mathias Vacek won the opening time trial and also claimed victory on stage two, the German rider went on to win the third stage in a sprint from a ten-man breakaway group.

Vacek finished in the same time in seventh place on the day after 201-kilometers and remains the overall leader of the five-day stage race. The Czech champion has a 39-second lead over Walscheid in second place overall, 1’06 over Axel van der Tuuk of Team Euskaltel-Euskadi in third, and 1’08 over Tim van Dijke of Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe.

Vacek had already triumphed from a similar situation on stage two.

There, a twelve-man breakaway group formed in the strong coastal winds of the Zeeland region, with four Lidl-Trek riders among them.

From this group, Vacek eventually attacked together with Tim van Dijke in the final kilometers and beat the Dutcman in a sprinting duel. Walscheid finished sixth, Edward Theuns ninth and Héctor Álvarez eleventh.

On Stage three, a very similar scenario unfolded: once again, strong winds shaped the entire day, and the peloton split into several groups early on the Oesterdam, a dam more than ten kilometres long running through the sea.

“It was again a day in the wind and I have to say on the dam there at the sea it was pretty on the limit. We had to really take care to not fly away,” Vacek explained.

“Everybody knew it would be echelons again, full gas the whole day. And in the end Bora, us and Visma again had the numbers in the first group. Going back on the dam it split again into a smaller group, the ten people that went to the finish.”

When the race crossed the Oesterdam for the second time at the beginning of the second half of the race, the decisive ten-man group featuring Walscheid and Vacek eventually got clear and built up a lead of as much as two minutes. They ultimately reached the finish with a 1’08 lead over the first larger chasing group.

In the final kilometers, Vacek did a large share of the work at the front to save Walscheid for the sprint — and Walscheid then beat Alessia Magagnotti of Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe.

“We really wanted to give Max the chance today to go for the win – I won two stages, so he also deserves it after all the work he did for me, and he used that chance perfectly to win the stage. It couldn’t go much better,” said Vacek.

Stages four and five on Saturday and Sunday will once again feature two completely flat stages around Schijndel and Waalwijk. This time, however, the race will no longer take place directly along the coast, so conditions could be somewhat less windy.

Walscheid reflected on his win:
“It was a good sprint. I really saved my legs over the last kilometers for this one effort. Vacek helped me very well – it's a pleasure, if the leader's jersey is turning for you so you can rest, and I'm glad we pulled it off.

“To win all three stages may seem easy, but it is a lot of hard work. Also today we needed to put the absolute maximum effort into it and we are super proud how we are performing this week. I'm not entirely sure about the weather tomorrow, but today and yesterday it was definitely anything but easy.

“I hope we have a little bit more of a quiet day tomorrow, because at the moment we have the cards in our hands and we are the team who can lose it. So it would be great to have a little bit of rest. But if it's another battle, we are also ready!”

Thursday, September 3: Stage 2, Westkapelle - Heinkenszand, 193.8 km

Stage 2 map & profile

Mathias Vacek wins stage two, apparently to the great displeasure of second-place Tim van Dijke.

Weather at the finish city of Heinkenszand at 2:35 PM, local time: 22C (72F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west-southwest at 37 km/hr (23 mph). There is a 9% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage two summary.

Lidl-Trek rider Mathias Vacek won the second stage of the ZLM Tour in Heinkenszand. After a grueling 194-kilometer race, the general classification leader beat a disappointed Tim van Dijke (Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe) in the sprint. Danny van Poppel won the sprint for third place behind them.

Crosswinds split the peloton early on
Strong winds during the stage from Westkapelle to Heinkenszand caused the peloton to quickly break apart into several echelons. Eventually, a lead group of thirteen riders formed, including Vacek, Walscheid, Alvarez Martinez, and Theuns for Lidl-Trek, and Mick van Dijke, Tim van Dijke, Van Poppel, and Mouris for Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe.

Duel between Vacek and Van Dijke
In the closing stages, Vacek and local rider Tim van Dijke managed to break away from the lead group. The Czech rider launched his sprint from a long way out, and Van Dijke was unable to overtake him. The rider from Zeeland was visibly disappointed after the finish: "It was an incredibly tough stage that required constant vigilance all day. I really wanted to win here on home turf, but when it came time to sprint, I quickly realized I didn't have enough energy left."
Lead extends in the standings

With this victory, Vacek strengthened his position in the general classification. He now holds a 45-second lead over teammate Max Walscheid and a 56-second advantage over Hector Alvarez, who retained the lead in the Skoda youth classification. Vacek also leads the PostcodeLoterij points classification. Stage 3

Preview
The third stage of the ZLM Tour on Friday, September 4, takes the riders from Roosendaal to Bergen op Zoom over a distance of 201.2 kilometers, featuring, among other things, multiple crossings of the Oesterdam.

Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Tour of Flanders: The Inside Story - The rocky roads of the Ronde van Vlaanderen is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the race city of Kapelle at 6:30 PM, local time: 20C (68F), cloudy, with the wind from the west-southwest at 18 km/hr (11 mph). There is an 11% chance of rain at.

The race: The first rider to start was Carl Emil Just Pedersen (Hagens Berman Jayco) at 5:21 PM.

Here's the race report from winner Mathias Vacek's Team Lidl-Trek:

Mathias Vacek was clearly the fastest on stage 1 at the ZLM Tour, winning the opening time trial ahead of Niklas Larsen and Lidl-Trek teammate Jakob Söderqvist.

Mathias Vacek has won the 21.1-kilometre opening time trial at the ZLM Tour in the Dutch town of Kapelle, Zeeland. The Czech ITT champion was 19.5 seconds faster than Denmark’s Niklas Larsen and now leads the five-day stage race comfortably.

Lidl-Trek dominated Stage 1, with Jakob Söderqvist finishing third, Max Walscheid fourth and Héctor Álvarez fifth in the time trial – 24, 25 and 26 seconds behind Vacek, respectively.

Edward Theuns finished 14th, while Thor Michielsen of the Future Racing squad was 19th. Otto Vergaerde, who saved his legs for the coming days, finished in 67th place.

The upcoming four stages will all be flat, but already on Stage 2 in Zeeland, the wind could be a huge factor. In general, the race will feature some really technical sections every day, with narrow roads and many corners.

Lidl-Trek will give it everything to defend the yellow jersey and make the most of their comfortable situation on the GC after Stage 1.

In Vacek’s words:
"It was quite a nice TT, I have to say – a bit of everything: Some technical parts and some long straights to push a lot of power. So I knew it could suite me and also in preparation for the World Championships it was a good one. So I really wanted to do well and go full. I'm really happy, that I could win here and gain some more confidence for the World Championships.

"The next stages will be quite hard, not parcours-wise, but for sure with the wind and the small roads, left and right it will be quite hectic. So for sure we'll have to watch out and be always in front. But now witcek-mathias quite a good gap I can really try to go for the GC and try to bring it home. It's a long way to go, but we have a good team here and I'm looking forward to the next stages".
