Weather at the start city of Beckenried at 2:20 PM, local time: 28C (82F), sunny, with the wind from the north at 11 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 1% chance of rain.

The stage: The final stage is only 10 kilometers long, but the 830 metres of altitude indicate just how steep the route to the finish Stockhütte will be. A lot can happen on this very difficult Individual Time Trial and we will see which cyclists still have something in reserve. Tactics are not allowed. It’s the final showdown in the battle against the clock and the fight for the yellow jersey of the Tour de Suisse 2025.

The race: First rider off was Olivier Le Gac (Groupama-FDJ) at 11:38 AM.

Here's the report from stage & final GC winner Joao Almeida's UAE Team Emirates-XRG:

UAE Team Emirates-XRG capped a landmark weekend with a sensational double victory as João Almeida clinched the overall title at the Tour de Suisse, while Filippo Baroncini sealed his first General Classification triumph at the Baloise Belgium Tour. The two victories also marked a major milestone for the team—the 50th win of the 2025 season.

João Almeida produced a clinical ride on the final Stage 8 uphill time trial, overturning a 33-second deficit to leapfrog Kévin Vauquelin (Arkéa–B&B Hotels) and secure overall victory at the Tour de Suisse.

Almeida’s win in the 10.1 km mountain test confirmed his consistency and tactical brilliance throughout the week having clawed back seconds since losing over three minutes on a wet stage 1. He would go on to redeem himself with three stage victories and also claimed the black points jersey.

Almeida: “I’m super happy. I did a good climb, and I was feeling really good. I think I started too fast, I over paced in the beginning. In the end, I hoped to have enough gas to push in the last kilometre, but in the end it was not necessary.

"One mistake can cost you a lot; luckily, we could make it up. At the end of the day, it’s a lesson: you should never give up. Sometimes things go wrong and nothing is perfect, but you need to keep trying. We kept trying and we did it. I’ll have time to enjoy this win and I’ll be ready for the Tour de France. I’ll support Tadej Pogačar there and hope we can get more great wins.”

Weather at the finish city of Emmetten at 3:15 PM, local time: 26C (78F), showers in the vicinity, with the wind from the northeast at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is a 65% chance of rain.

The stage: It is the last chance to influence the general classification before the final individual time trial. Stage 7 presents several opportunities to do so. From the climb to Schindellegi, the passage over the Bürgenstock or the short final climb to Emmetten. Will the GC riders decide the stage win amongst themselves, or will there be courageous individuals making their bid for victory?

The race: Jordi Meeus (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), Petr Kelemen (Tudor Pro Cycling) & Andrea Bagioli (Lidl-Trek) did not start. Early in the stage Sjoerd Bax (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) & Steven Kruijswijk (Visma | Lease a Bike) abandoned.

After crashing Albert Torres (Movistar) had to leave the race, as did Simon Clarke, Matthew Ricitello (both Israel-Premier Tech) & Jasha Sutterlin (Jayco AlUla). Late in the stage Roger Adria (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) abandoned.

Here's the stage seven report from second-place Oscar Onley's Team Picnic-PostNL:

Stage 7 delivered another exciting mountain showdown at the Tour de Suisse, and the Team Picnic PostNL riders were once again right in the thick of the action. Early in the stage, a strong breakaway of seven riders formed, including Frank van den Broek. The group worked well together and built up a lead of over three minutes. As the race approached the mountains, the peloton gradually brought the gap down, and by the base of the penultimate climb, the lead was reduced to 1’19”.

As the road tilted upward, the GC battle kicked off. Oscar Onley was well-positioned in the front of the peloton and followed a sharp acceleration from Felix Gall. Around the same time, out front, Quinn Simmons went solo from the breakaway with Van den Broek continuing to chase hard behind. With the pace ramping up in both the break and the peloton, Van den Broek was caught by the GC group, but he didn’t stop there.

After digging deep to rejoin the front, he immediately turned to support duties—passing bottles and gels to Oscar and then going to the front of the group to help drive the pace heading into the final climb. On the final 3.9 km ascent to Emmetten, Onley showed his strength once again. Responding to the key moves, he rode a composed and determined climb, ultimately sprinting to second place—securing his fourth podium finish of the race.

After the finish Onley said: “We went hard on the second-to-last climb and the plan was to attack across to Frank, but yeah, he just didn’t have enough time. We did a really good job in the valley, keeping it controlled, and then it was just down to the legs on the final climb. It was hard - there was a bit of a headwind, so it wasn’t easy to make the difference.

"I guess I’m happy with the result. I wanted to gain a bit more time, but Alaphilippe is really strong and Vauquelin is going well too, so there wasn’t much I could do. The plan for tomorrow is to go as hard as I can in the time trial and see where I end up. There are no tactics and you can’t control anything, so I’ve just got to do what I can do.”

Weather at the finish city of Neuhausen am Rheinfall at 2:20 PM, local time: 14C (82F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 14 km/hr (9 mph). No rain is forecast.

The stage: After a few difficult stages, the sprinters’ teams are unlikely to let the opportunity for a stage win go begging. Of course in Switzerland a sprint stage will still involve climbs. A total of almost 2,400 metres awaits the cyclists which could signal opportunities for a strong breakaway group. The last two kilometres may also provide further excitement, as the route climbs steadily uphill to the Flame Rouge.

The race: About a third into the stage Nolann Mahoudo (Cofidis) & Roel Sintmaartenskijk (Intermarché-Wanty) abandoned.

Here's the report from stage winner Jordi Meeus' Team Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe:

A late catch, a perfect lead-out, and a fast finish: Jordi Meeus takes his second win of the season, on Stage 6 of the Tour de Suisse.

Jordi Meeus sprinted to his second win of the season on Stage 6 of the Tour de Suisse, powering across the line in Neuhausen am Rheinfall after a dramatic chase to bring back the day’s break.

The 186.7km stage from Chur almost looked set to reward the escapees, with a trio holding out in front for more than 180 kilometres. It took a concerted effort from several sprint teams, including Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe, to finally reel them in inside the last kilometre.

With the peloton lined out and the final few hundred metres approaching, Danny van Poppel hit the front to bring Jordi Meeus into position. As the race veered into the final corner and the last 300 metres opened up, Van Poppel launched Meeus into the finishing straight. The Belgian surged past his rivals and carried his speed all the way to the line, taking the win ahead of Ballerini and Askey. Van Poppel also finished strongly to place sixth.

“It’s definitely been a hard week for me so far, it’s not really been my favourite terrain with all the hills and climbs. I was disappointed after Stage 2 because that was supposed to be a flatter stage, but I didn’t feel great at the start of the week. Each day my legs got better, and this morning I could feel that I had good shape. I’m really happy I could finish it off today. It’s only my second win at WorldTour level, so I’m super happy to take this one home.” - Jordi Meeus

Oscar Onley just beats Joao Almeida for the stage win.

Tour de France: 2019

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, 2019: A Year of New Faces is available in both Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Santa Maria Val Mûstair at 2:25 PM, local time: 26C (79F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the north-northeast at 14 km/hr (9 mph). There is a 36% chance of rain.

The stage: The undisputed Queen Stage of the Tour de Suisse 2025 takes place on the fifth day. The highest point of the Tour awaits shortly after the start. At 2,284 metres above sea level, the Julier Pass is the roof of the Tour this year.

However, the stage, which is located entirely in the canton of Graubünden, has a lot more in store for the riders. The Julier Pass is followed by the San Bernardino Pass (2,067 metres above sea level) and, the icing on the cake, the steep and difficult final climb to Santa Maria in Calanca. The climb up to Santa Maria is probably unknown to many riders, making things all the more exciting.

The race: Midway into the stage Kevin Colleoni (Intermarché-Wanty) abandoned.

Here's the stage five report from winner Oscar Onley's Team Picnic-PostNL:

Team Picnic PostNL secured a brilliant win on Thursday afternoon, where a good team ride set-up Oscar Onley who rode a patient and measured climb in the finale, powering to stage victory at Tour de Suisse.

After strong performances in the previous days with third and then second stage places, Team Picnic PostNL set their sights one place higher for stage five of Tour de Suisse. Helping to control a strong breakaway up the road, the team ensured GC finisher Onley was well positioned for the first passage of the finish climb. On that ascent, Onley rode within himself and made sure to crest within the group but not go over the limit.

More riders came back on the valley road that followed which then set up a final showdown on the last climb. Biding his time, Onley seized his moment around halfway up and went clear solo at the head of the race. A strong Almeida bridged to him, and the duo worked well all the way to the finish; both looking to put as much time into the others as possible. With something left in the tank, Onley came off of Almeida’s wheel with 150 meters to go and kicked hard, with a punchy uphill sprint that just held off his charging opponent come the line. After catching his breath, Onley could celebrate a great win for the team after a strong ride by everyone involved; as Team Picnic PostNL and he move up on the GC ahead of the final three stages.

A delighted Onley expressed: “I knew I was in good shape and feeling good this week, but obviously with someone like Almeida who’s shown how strong he is already this week; then we knew it would be tough. Also, with a strong break up front there was a chance that the win might not have came from the bunch in the end. I felt good all day and just gave it a go on the last climb. I don’t win often and had quite a few podiums or close results this year, so to pull it off today is really nice for myself and also for the team, and my teammates too. They do a really good job every day, and today was no different so it’s nice to be able to pay them back. I was quite disappointed after that first stage to lose time on the GC. Warren and the coaching staff on the team were really supportive of me though, and said how long and hard the week is, and that we could try and get back into it come the weekend. We’re just trying to chip away at it each day.”

Team Picnic PostNL coach Pim Ligthart added: “That was a really nice win today. Like every stage so far the guys were really committed to our goals and to each other, and showed some good teamwork, keeping Oscar safe and protected ahead of the second last climb. Oscar was patient today and didn’t spend any extra energy that he didn’t need to before the last time up the climb. On the ascent, he rode it really smart too and it paid off. It’s a well-deserved win for him but also the whole team. It’s been a really nice week her so far, and we’ve rode well each day as a team, so we’ll look to keep that momentum up for the rest of the race.”

Weather at the finish at Piuro at 2:00 PM, local time: 29C (84F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the south-southwest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Following a crash during stage three, Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) did not start as a precautionary measure. Early in the stage Pelayo Sanchez (Movistar) abandoned.

Here's the race report from second-place Oscar Onley's Team Picnic-PostNL:

The first big mountain pass of the Tour de Suisse, the Splügenpass, awaited the peloton today. Officially almost nine kilometres at seven percent in gradient, the road beforehand climbed up in steps, so the whole ascent could be categorised at four percent for almost 35 kilometres; with those steeper gradients in the finale as they crested above 2100 metres in elevation.

From the start a fierce pace was set in the peloton as multiple teams and riders looked to make the breakaway. The attacks continued for well over an hour before eventually a group went clear out front. Team Picnic PostNL stayed within the peloton and rallied around Oscar Onley, keeping him well positioned for what was to come. On the ascent the team took control and started to up the pace, ensuring that the breakaway was within a catchable distance. Then onto the steeper section of the climb, the tempo ramped up even further and the peloton split to shreds. Onley climbed superbly to top the ascent in third place, and rode a good descent down the other side behind lone-leader Almeida.

More riders joined Onley’s group as they approached the bottom of the descent and despite there being a few riders going through and off, the pace started to go out from the group and Almeida’s advantage extended. Sensing that, Onley almost made a stealth attack off the front when he was making his pull at the front and he was quickly joined by O’Connor. The duo worked well together for the final five kilometres and kept rotating, extending the gap to those behind come the line, where Onley once more produced a strong kick to take second place on the stage; and with that move up to eighth on GC.

Onley reflected: “We planned for chaos today as no team seemed strong enough to fully control. The guys covered the moves well before Alex did a really big job to bring the break back before the main climb. I was feeling pretty good on the climb but just had to let go of Almeida towards the top. I was looking for opportunities in the final to try and get away as our group were playing around a bit, and managed to do that.”

Team Picnic PostNL coach Pim Ligthart added: “It was some really good teamwork once more from the guys today, where we also made the pace in the bunch before the climb. Oscar tried to follow as long as possible behind Almeida, but he was really strong on the big climb. Oscar did well to come over the top in the chase group and then down the descent on the other side. Oscar read the race really well to attack after he got a bit of a gap and there was hesitation behind him at six kilometres, where he was joined by O’Connor. The two of them rode it to the finish and Oscar took a really nice second place. It was a good job from the whole team today and we’re looking forward to the next stages.”

Weather at the finish city of Heiden at 2:15 PM, local time: 22C (72F), sunny, with the wind from the north-northwest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the stage three report from third-place Oscar Onley's Team Picnic-PostNL.

A day in the rolling hills at the Tour de Suisse saw the peloton traverse a 195 kilometre route from Aarau to Heiden; with the latter half of the day featuring more ascents, and hardly any flat roads in the final 30 kilometres. It was a fast start to the action but a break of six formed out front, with all Team Picnic PostNL riders in the peloton; looking after each other and keeping GC finisher Oscar Onley safe.

In the middle of the stage an increase in pace within the peloton cut the gap to 30 seconds for those ahead, but things slowed and it increased once more. Coming into the last 40 kilometres the team did a good job to come forward in the bunch ahead of the hilly finale. However, the break had worked together and on the Knolhusen climb Simmons attacked for what would ultimately be the stage winning move. Warren Barguil helped to set a good tempo in the peloton to stretch things out and keep Onley well positioned for the tricky descents, before Frank van den Broek helped bring him to the fore for the final three kilometre drag to the line.

Despite Simmons being ahead, it didn’t deter the peloton and there were attacks from GC riders, with Onley looking sprightly to follow the wheels and keep himself in contention at the front. Coming around the last corner, Onley kicked hard and produced a good sprint to take a strong third place on the day; a nice reward after some good teamwork.

Story of the Tour de France Volume 2

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, Vol 2: 1976 - 2018 is available in print, Kindle eBook & Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at Schwarzsee at 2:25 PM, local time: 18C (64F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the northeast at 19 km/hr (12 mph). There is just a 4% chance of rain.

The race: Max van der Meulen (Bahrain Victorious) & Anton Palzer (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) did not start.

Here's the stage two report from second-place Fabio Christen's Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team:

Fabio Christen sprinted to a second place in Schwarzsee in the second stage of the Tour de Suisse. The 22-year-old Swiss rider chose the right move in the final kilometer after his brother Jan was caught after a late move. In a direct sprint with Vincenzo Albanese he had to settle for second.

“I looked forward to today. This was a stage I had done a recon of one month ago and knew what was coming. It was all in my head,” Fabio said directly after the finish. “I knew there would be attacks. It was my brother who attacked but I knew I had to wait because attacks would probably not make it on this finish. I think I launched my sprint at the right moment but Albanese chose the same time. He took the shorter line and I didn’t have time to go around him.”

The Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team with Sjoerd Bax, David de la Cruz, Gianluca Brambilla, Marcel Camprubí, David González and our Swiss duo Matteo Badilatti and Fabio Christen showed they were more than ready for today.

“The team did a great job keeping me at the front in the final 10 kilometers,” Fabio continued. “My dream is to win a stage here in Switzerland. The legs are obviously good and the team is strong. That gives morale so we will keep trying.

Sports director Michael Albasini saw a very committed team on the roads from Aarau to Schwarzsee.

“I thought there might be a bigger breakaway today,” he analyses. “Yesterday we had that big breakaway with Sjoerd and Matteo. It was a hard day today as well but in the end the sprinter teams went for it which was good for us.”

“The team around Fabio was strong and committed which was great to see. He clearly had the legs to win but there will be more chances. I know tomorrow’s finish in Heiden very well because Peter Sagan beat me there once. Tomorrow’s start is tricky so it could be a breakaway day. However, Fabio and the team are looking strong so we hope to have another chance to show our Swiss team on Swiss roads again tomorrow.”

Weather at the start/finish city of Küssnacht at 2:40 PM, local time: 26C (79F), fair, with the wind from the north-northeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 13% chance of rain, rising to 100% at 5:00 PM.

The race: Here is the report from stage winner Romain Grégoire's Team Groupama-FDJ.

This is what can be called a dream start for Romain Grégoire and the Groupama-FDJ cycling team! In the short opening stage of the Tour de Suisse, the young Frenchman took advantage of a crazy start to the race to enter a breakaway of around thirty riders! The peloton couldn’t compete with this group, which therefore fought for victory in the final fifteen kilometres.

Among the strongest on the last climb, the rider from Besançon then broke away on the downhill and kept on going with a ten-kilometre solo to finish it off in style! In addition to his first WorldTour victory this season, Romain Grégoire took the leader’s yellow jersey.

The race:
A very intense start to the Tour de Suisse was expected on Sunday on the first stage, taking place around Küssnacht. Over a course of barely 130 kilometres, with a very steep climb after twenty kilometres of racing, but also with twenty kilometres to go, the race promised to be quite open. The first few minutes confirmed it, and the day’s breakaway took time to establish itself. “We really thought it could be a day for the breakaway,” explained William Green. “In that case, it was probably going to be a strong breakaway, which would go clear on the first climb. The stage was obviously really suitable for Romain if the breakaway was caught, but we initially wanted to put Valentin in front today. In the end, it went full gas on the climb, then it was chaos on the descent and after”.

Wet roads at the start to the first stage.

A large number of attacks occurred inside a fragmented peloton, until twenty-eight riders managed to open a proper gap around kilometre 40. “We had Stefan and Romain in front first,” William explained. “Stefan followed many moves, so we were represented there, then Romain followed one move and it was the right one!” “I hadn’t planned to take the breakaway this morning, but it kept on attacking from all sides, and we had to follow the moves,” added Romain.

After the first third of the race, the Frenchman found himself with about twenty competitors at the front, and with a lead that quickly exceeded three minutes. “I was the only one from the team, but there were squads with numbers who also had their GC rider,” Romain added. “I focused on them a bit. As long as they were in control, there was no need to move”. “It was actually a super hard tempo in this breakaway,” said William. “It was impossible for anyone to attack.”

This was also reflected in the peloton’s inability to really get closer from the fugitives. Entering the final forty kilometres, while pouring rain appeared on the course, the gap between the two groups remained over three minutes. Twenty kilometres later, the breakaway approached the decisive climb of Michaelskreuz (3.9 km at 8.9%) with a good margin, which was more than enough to go for victory. “Romain rode most of the climb in the top five positions, then when O’Connor took over and rode a hard tempo, he was still there comfortable,” William explained. The selection initially came from behind, but about a kilometre from the summit, the young man quickly reacted to an acceleration from Julian Alaphilippe, before pursuing the effort with the former double world champion, Kévin Vauquelin and Bart Lemmen.

The four men broke away from the rest of the breakaway at the summit, and after a kilometre of downhill, Romain Grégoire gradually distanced himself from his last three competitors. “I think we were roughly at the same level,” he said. “At the top of the last climb, I wanted to get in front to make the descent safely and not be affected by the others’ lines. In the end, after 2 or 3 wet bends, I found myself with a small gap, and I thought that it was worth taking a little more risk. So I went flat out to the end. I don’t think I was stronger, but I managed to make the difference technically.” However, his lead didn’t initially exceed 6-7 seconds, and it is therefore thanks to his raw power that he stayed away in a final uphill section before entering the last six, more linear kilometers. “His performance in the final kilometres shows that he’s in super form,” William pointed out. “Romain was probably the fastest in the sprint, but he rode away solo and really committed to it.”

While the gap remained more or less the same for some time, the Groupama-FDJ rider finally managed to get the better of his rivals at the start of the final five kilometres, despite a relentless chase behind him. His lead indeed increased to ten seconds, then to fifteen entering the final kilometre. In control in the last moments, Romain Grégoire was even able to take his time to enjoy this resounding success. “It’s always exceptional to win, especially at the WorldTour level,” he said a few minutes later. “It’s just pure joy and a great relief. After what happened in the Basque Country and Ardèche, it also feels good to win with some margin, and in a clear and clean way. I’m proud of this victory, I’m super happy, and I’m going to enjoy it!” “Romain is a special rider,” added William. “He’s always motivated, he knows what he wants, and he just completely went for it today. It was really special how he won. It’s also the last preparation race before the Tour, there were a lot of strong guys at the start or in the breakaway, so I think that makes it even more meaningful for him.”

Romain Grégoire celebrates a bit after his win.

The icing on the cake: Romain Grégoire took the leader’s yellow jersey at the end of this first day of racing, which the main GC riders concluded more than three minutes behind the young Frenchman. “A yellow jersey in a WorldTour race isn’t a usual thing,” he said. “The Tour de Suisse is already a success, but we’ll take it one stage at a time. Tomorrow, I should be able to hold on to it. And now that I’ve got a lead in the general classification, I might as well fight every day and see where it takes me.”“We didn’t come here with any particular ambition for the general classification,” concluded William. “We were really focused on the stages, and we’ve already won one thanks to Romain’s performance today. Now, we’re going to do our best to defend the yellow jersey for as long as possible and we’ll see what comes out, even if there are still opportunities on the stages that we certainly won’t sacrifice. Johan will unfortunately not be with us tomorrow after he was forced to abandon. He would have been perfect to control the race, but the team we have here is very strong and we’re confident for what comes next.”
