Weather at the start/finish city of Amorebieta Etxano at 1:30 PM, local time: 20C (68F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Sergio Higuita's Team Bora-hansgrohe.

The stage around Amorebieta-Etxano near Bilbao, which was shortened to 164.5 km, was energy-sapping, featuring a number of short but steep climbs before the route ended with a demanding finishing lap. Before the final intermediate sprint, the race was all together but on the uncategorised climb immediately afterwards, a 20-man group with Sergio Higuita broke clear from the peloton.

With 5km remaining, the leaders had a 15-second gap. With 200m to the finish line, Sergio launched his sprint and the Colombian was too fast to be caught. He thereby took the second stage win for BORA-hansgrohe in this year's race and also moves up to 8th place in the general classification.

"It was a really tough stage today but I knew that I had a good chance to take a top result. I knew the finish well. In the finale, I saw the opportunity and knew that I had to take it. I went actually a little bit early, but in the end, I was strong enough to keep my lead and not be reeled back. I'm really happy to give the team a second stage win, and it's always nice to win at this race, as I have good memories here. After a few not so easy months, this stage victory, plus my podium at GP Indurain, has given me back more confidence. It's really motivating for me and the team." - Sergio Higuita

"We actually planned to put a rider in the breakaway, to have a relay station in the tough final, and with the objective of being numerically stronger for the classics-like finale. It didn't work out because only two riders were able to go clear today, so we then set everything up to support Sergio and Emu. That worked out well and the whole team put in a very good performance. I have to say that Florian Lipowitz played a huge part in our success today. He really went toe-to-toe with the big riders. In the end, Sergio was able to complete this strong teamwork in a really outstanding manner. We are very happy with this victory, especially after the unfortunate events of the third stage. Of course, this victory makes us very confident for the final stage. The form is there and tomorrow we'll ride strongly once again and try to come out with a great result in the general classification as well." - Christian Pömer, Sports Director

Weather at the start-finish city of Santurtzi at 1:50 PM, local time: 18C (64F), sunny, with the wind from the north at 10 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here is the race organizer's stage four summary.

We have passed the halfway point of the Itzulia 2023 and reached stage 4, with start and finish lines in Santurtzi. A stage with 175 kilometres and 4 mountain passes.

The stage started fast, with many breakaway attempts, but a group of riders did not form until kilometre 40: Harm Vanhoucke (DSM, 76), Jonathan Caicedo (EFE, 83), Natnael Tesfazion (TFS, 157), Jon Barrenetxea (CJR, 194), Alan Jousseaume (TEN, 225).

The peloton was led by Jumbo Visma for the first part of the race, letting the leading group go for 6 minutes and 45 seconds. In the second half of the stage, Ineos Grenadier upped the pace and quickly reduced the gap. Jon Barrenetxea, in the breakaway, scored some very important points for the mountain classification.

With 28 kilometres to go, the breakaway group was neutralised and the overall favourites fought to the last metre for the sprint points. Everything counts in this year’s tight race. Thereafter, the race focussed on the last pass of the day. EF Education-Easypost upped the pace and Jonas Vingegaard ran out of teammates.

With 6 kilometres to go before the finish, the leader launched a very hard attack. He could only be followed by a great Mikel Landa (TBV, 141). The following group included Enric Mas (MOV, 121), Ion Izagirre (COF, 61), Sergio Higuita (BOH, 53) and David Gaudu (GFC, 91) amongst others. At the front, all the pressure was on the yellow jersey and they opened a gap of 28 seconds with the chasing group.

The leading duo reached the top of La Asturiana with a 32-second lead and faced the last 14 kilometres with a clear chance of winning the stage.

Mikel Landa and Jonas Vingegaard did not stop until the finish line and although they were almost neutralised in the last metres, the Danish Jumbo Visma rider took the stage with Mikel Landa coming second.

Stage 3 profile

Jonas Vingegaard takes a solo win and the GC lead.

Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle

David L. Stanley's masterful telling of his bout with skin cancer Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Amasa Villabona at 1:25 PM, local time: 14C (58F), sunny, with the wind from the north at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Jonas Vingegaard's Team Jumbo-Visma.

Jonas Vingegaard has won the third stage of the Itzulia Basque Country. On the extremely steep finish in Villabona, the Dane of Team Jumbo-Visma was too fast for his rivals. Thanks to the victory, Vingegaard starts in the leader's jersey tomorrow.

The stage from Errenteria to Villabona was another tough one with two long climbs and a handful of steep hills. After the six early escapees were caught with 25 kilometres to go, several riders tried to escape. Thanks in part to the efforts by Attila Valter, everything came together in the final kilometre.

On the heavy ascent in a vineyard, Vingegaard waited for his chance to attack. At the finish, he was clear of his closest rivals. "I am thrilled and proud that I was able to finish the team's work", Vingegaard said.

"Itzulia Basque Country is one of my favourite races, so to win here is amazing. It was a very tough last climb, although the other climbs were also tough. The guys worked their butts off again, and luckily I had the legs to finish it off. I'm very grateful to them."

Vingegaard says he will do everything possible to keep the yellow leader's jersey. "It is a challenging race to control; we have seen that in recent years", he said. "I think we are strong enough to keep the jersey, but we have to take it one day at a time."

For Team Jumbo-Visma, it is already the 21st victory of the season. It marks Vingegaard's sixth triumph of the year.

Weather at the finish city of Leitza at 1:50 PM, local time: 10C (50F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the northwest at 16 km/hr (10 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain during the afternoon.

The race: Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) has a respiratory infection and did not start stage two.

Here's the report from stage winner & new GC leader Ide Schelling's Team Bora-hansgrohe

With 193.8 km, today's stage covered the longest distance of the race. The route between Viana and Leitza featured five climbs before heading to the finish on a circuit with winding roads and a long and fast descent. With 500m remaining, Ide launched his sprint and wasn't able to be brought back. The Dutchman thereby celebrated his first WorldTour victory and takes over the lead in the general classification.

"Today I took my first WorldTour victory and of course I'm immensely proud of it. I was well positioned before the last descent. With one kilometer left, I found a gap and 500 metres later I opened up my sprint. With the tricky turns in the finale, I knew it would be difficult to be caught. I have to say that I am surprised that such a final was allowed by the UCI, because it could have been quite dangerous. But I think everyone made it through fine." - Ide Schelling

"Yesterday we weren't on target in the finale and Ide really took that on himself after the race. I think that made him all the more focused and motivated for today. We had a long meeting before the stage and went through our plan in great detail and Ide really executed it very well. The guys also supported him and brought him into a very good position before the finale. He took the last kilometers alone from the front and rode well around the roundabouts. Nevertheless, I have to say that such an arrival had the potential to be quite dangerous and it's not usual to see such a finish in a WorldTour race. But in terms of the team's performance, it was a deserved win for Ide, which also gives us a lot of confidence for the rest of the week." - Jens Zemke

Stage 1 profile

Ethan Hayter takes the first stage.

Tour de France: 2021 Bill & Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, 2021: The Little Cannibal Dominates is available in both Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Labastida at 2:00 PM, local time: 11C (52F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the north-northwest at 10 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast for the afternoon.

The race: Jaakko Hanninen (Ag2r-Citroën) did not start.

Here the report from stage winner Ethan Hayter's Team INEOS Grenadiers.

Ethan Hayter ensured the INEOS Grenadiers got off to a perfect start in the Basque Country with sprint victory on stage one.

The Brit notched up his first win of 2023 in style, latching on to a brilliant final lead-out from Omar Fraile on the uphill drag into Labastida. Launching into the final 100 metres, there was no stopping Hayter, who also moved into the early race lead.

It was a strong day all round for the team, who committed to the cause early and set about controlling the race. Egan Bernal got through a lot of work on the front alongside Brandon Rivera.

In the early GC battle it was a good opening day for Dani Martinez, who jumped out of the pack to snare three bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint with 20km to go. The Colombian edged out Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) with an impressive turn of speed. Finishing high up in the bunch, Martinez sits fourth overall, just seven seconds back on his teammate.

Luke Plapp set the final lead-out in motion and also finished on the end of the tail bunch. All in all it was a great start for the team, with Hayter pulling on the yellow jersey.

Ethan Hayter:
"It’s amazing. My team really backed me, even after I wasn’t amazing in Catalunya. But I stepped up I think and they were all in for me today. I’ve just got to thank them. [Omar’s] an expert in the Basque Country and this final was perfect. I just had to do the last 100 metres.

"It’s really nice, especially to get my first win this year. I broke my collarbone in Australia and it took me a while to come back from that. Hopefully this gives me more confidence to keep going forward."
