The race: Here's the race organizer's report.
Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates - XRG) sealed the overall title at the 2026 Lloyds Tour of Britain Men on his first participation after another stunning team performance on stage five in the Scottish Borders, as his teammate Nils Politt (UAE Team Emirates - XRG) took home an emotional stage win in Earlston.
35-year-old Wellens’ victory was forged on the previous stage in North Yorkshire but was tempered on the Scottish lanes, where once again UAE Team Emirates pulled together as a unit to tear the race apart and ensure it was a day of double delight.
The riders set off from Earlston following a guard of honour for the retiring Ben Swift of Netcompany INEOS and it wasn’t long before the break of the day was established, primarily by the leader of the King of the Mountains competition Michal Schuran (Team United Shipping), who was keen to cement his lead at the top of the standings. The Czech rider was joined by Ben Wiggins (Great Britain Cycling Team), Jonah Killy (Tarteletto - Isorex) and Marcus Sander (BHS - PL Beton Bornholm).
All went to plan for Schuran, who helped his breakaway comrades establish a strong lead on the approach to the three categorised climbs in the stage, with Redstone Rig appearing first and followed shortly by Duddy Bank, where the 30-year-old earned maximum points on both climbs, meaning his lead was now insurmountable and he simply had to finish the stage to take home the jersey.
The approach to the summit at Duddy Bank was also where UAE Team Emirates launched their assault to counter a similar attempt by Netcompany INEOS, drilling on the front of the peloton with five riders including Politt and Wellens, with splits appearing almost immediately on the crest of the climb.
The climbs continued to come, with final categorised ascent of the day coming at Hardens Hill saw the break be caught and an elite group form at the summit, with all UAE riders bar Felix Grosschartner present, alongside Filippo Ganna and Connor Swift (Netcompany INEOS), with Wiggins and Sander surviving from the break, as Benoit Cosnefroy (UAE Team Emirates - XRG) took the KoM points over the top.
The pace was breakneck down the descent and into the first intermediate sprint at Gordon, which was taken by Ganna in his chase for bonus seconds and it was a carbon copy for the second intermediate sprint on the first passage of the finish line, with Ganna taking a total of 20 points in the points classification and six bonus seconds.
As the group took the bell, it seemed certain the group would contest the win and UAE used their numbers to their advantage, with Politt launched with just over seven kilometres to go, using his raw power to quickly build a 30-second advantage.
The German would ride alone to the line, where he celebrated by pointing to the sky in honour of his grandfather, who had recently passed away, while behind his teammates rolled in, celebrating the two victories in style, as long time leader of the race Lewis Askey (NSN Cycling Team) held on to second overall and stood on the podium as best overall British rider, while Jasper Stuyven (Fix All Quick-Step) capitalised on the chaos of the day to move into the final step of the overall podium.
Ganna’s efforts for the podium were not totally in vain as his performances in the intermediate sprints saw him take the lead of the sprint classification, while Schuran successfully finished the stage to take home the King of the Mountains jersey, while also sealing the overall combativity award for the race for his breakaway heroics throughout the week.
Elliot Rowe (Great Britain Cycling Team) capped off a magnificent week of racing by winning the young rider classification, while his teammate Wiggins was awarded the combativity award for the stage, as elsewhere UAE Team Emirates - XRG took home the best team award for the race.
On his overall victory, Wellens said:
“It was a very successful week. We came here for the GC. And today we also have this stage victory so everything’s been perfect.
“Today to be honest we just wanted to defend the leader’s jersey, we didn’t want to attack, we didn’t want to make a hard race, we just wanted to ride the same, defensive. But then suddenly in the crosswinds INEOS started to ride very hard, we just followed.”
Meanwhile, Politt on his stage victory said: “I have to thank the boys for an amazing week and amazing day for me. This victory is for my grandpa, he passed away some weeks ago so I need to give him something. It was a team effort and it was a victory for the team today.”

Stage 5 map:

Saturday, September 5: Stage 4, Helmsley - Leyburn, 165.8 km

Cees Bol wins stage four.
James Witherell's book Bicycle History: A Chronological History of People, Races and Technology is available in both print and Kindle eBook formats. To get your copy just click on the Amazon link on the right.
Weather at the finish city of Leyburn at 1:30 PM, local time: 18C (64F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 26 km/hr (16 mph). There is an 8% chance of rain.
The race: Midway into the stage Cian Keogh (APS Pro Cycling Team) abandoned.
Here's the race organizer's stage four report:
Cees Bol (Decathlon CMA CGM Team) pulled out a performance of the highest degree to seal victory on stage four of the 2026 Lloyds Tour of Britain Men in Leyburn as Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates - XRG) moved into the overall race lead following a climbing masterclass from his team.
North Yorkshire, in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, played host to the queen stage of this year’s race with a feast of high category climbs and blustery conditions on the heights of the moors facing the peloton as they rolled out from Helmsley which was bathed in late morning sun.
Six riders were quick to move off the front, including Yorkshireman Ben Swift (Netcompany INEOS) who had been waved on by his family at the start. The veteran, on the penultimate stage of his racing career in the UK, was joined by Bol, Xando Muerisse (Pinorello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team), Ian Lopez (Modern Adventure), Brem Deman (Team Flanders Baloise) and Boas Lysgaard (BHS-PL Beton Bornholm).
The group established a strong lead of over four minutes at one point, before soon passing the only intermediate sprint point of the day at Ripon, which was taken by Lopez. The young American did not stop there, however, and quickly also sealed maximum points on the first two King of the Mountain ascents at Greenhow and Kidstones.
It was on Kidstones, a second category climb, that UAE Team Emirates began to drive the chase in the peloton behind in aid of Wellens, who sat second on GC, just 12 seconds adrift, at the beginning of the day. The breaks advantage was eliminated as the race hit the toughest, and final, categorised climb of the day at the first category Redmire.
Here, the work done by his teammates saw Wellens able to launch his attack midway on the climb, with only best young rider Elliot Rowe (Great Britain Cycling Team) able to follow for the time being, as the duo soon caught the remnants of the break.
Rowe could not cope with the pace being set by Wellens, with Bol now the only man who could follow the wheel of the Belgian, with the gap to the chasing group containing the race favourites and current leader Lewis Askey (NSN Cycling Team) growing ever greater.
Wellens led Bol over the summit of Redmire, with the pair continuing to drive on to hold onto the advantage they had set, which hovered between a minute and 1:30 for the following 30km.
NSN and Netcompany INEOS kept belief behind that the leaders could be caught and they had cut the deficit to just over 30 seconds as the final drag to Leyburn came into view, but there was to be no such luck as Bol, the faster of the leading duo, soon pushed on to be the first across the line, taking his second career Lloyds Tour of Britain stage win.
Wellens can thank the supreme performance of his team for their aid in reversing the order of the top two GC positions, as well as his own magnificent performance, which coincidentally saw him take the combativity award for the stage.
The Belgian now leads the race by 21 seconds from Askey, while the Brit can take small consolation from the day as he regains the lead in the points competition, in which he holds a three point advantage over earlier stage victors, Tim Merlier (Fix All Quick-Step) and Olav Kooij (Decathlon CMA CGM Team).
Rowe continues his impressive race performance on the day, retaining the lead in the young riders competition, while Michal Schuran (Team United Shipping) heads the King of the Mountains classification surviving its toughest challenge of the week, though his lead is now cut to just four points from Meurisse, with another three second category climbs to come on the final stage.
On his victory, Bol said:
“The win was unexpected for me. I was going in the break to actually help my teammate Dan [Hoole]. I found myself in the leading group on the top of the last climb and I knew the stage win was possible.
“I was suffering really hard because there was still a small hill two kilometres to go and Tim was really keeping the pace high there. All my other pro victories are from a sprint, but this is the first one from the breakaway, I enjoyed it.”
New race leader Wellens said:
“I said at the beginning of the stage that I felt super good, so I had confidence on the climb, but I didn’t know how good Askey was because it’s not easy to drop somebody. The team went all out when Felix [Grossschartner] and Benoit [Cosnefroy] started pulling.
“I’m feeling really good but tomorrow can be hectic. Hopefully there are some climbs and maybe in the beginning some rain, I hope the advantage will be enough to keep the green jersey until the end.”
The Lloyds Tour of Britain Men winner will be crowned on Sunday when the spectacle concludes in the Scottish Borders, with the village of Earlston hosting a stage for the first time.

Olav Kooij wins stage three

Weather at the finish city of Beverley at 4:00 PM, lcoal time: 18C (65F), cloudy, with the wind from the west at 27 km/hr (17 mph). There is a 23% chance of rain.
The race: Yannis Voisard (Tudor Pro Cycling Team) did not start.
Here's the race organizer's stage three report:
The third stage of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Men 2026 was decided on a frantic sprint for the line, with Olav Kooij (Decathlon CMA CGM Team) coming out on top in a battle of the sprint kings, holding off stage two winner Tim Merlier (Fix All Quick-Step) to seal the eighth event stage win of his career and edge nearer to Sir Mark Cavendish’s record of 10.
For Kooij, it was his second race victory in Beverley as he replicated his performance from 2023, winning a scrappy sprint for the line as the whole field battled a powerful headwind on a rise to the line.
Riders made a fast start on a blustery day with early attacks and counter-attacks, with the first break of the day being made by six riders - Dylan Vandenstorme (Team Flanders-Baloise), Gianni Marchand, Arne Santy (Tarteletto - Isorex), Karl Hall (Bike Aid) and Victor Johannsen (BHS-PL Betom Bornholm), with King of the Mountains leader Michal Schuran (Team United Shipping) completing the lineup as he hunted for further points in the classification.
First on the menu however was the initial intermediate sprint of the day along the East Yorkshire coast at Skipsea, taken by Johannsen before the climbing could begin in earnest.
Three third category climbs in a row now awaited at Burton Road, Tire Ewe Hill and Keeper’s Hill respectively and Schuran made no mistake, taking the maximum points on every ascent, while on the approach to the final climb at Keeper’s Hill, the peloton finally reeled in the six riders as Netcompany INEOS attempted to claw back time in the general classification that their rider Filippo Ganna lost yesterday in the crosswinds.
This push in pace could not force a split however and from the momentary peace, Yorben Lauryssen (Tarteletto - Isorex) launched an attack of his own, where he would eventually establish an advantage of over two minutes. Conn McDunphy (APS Pro Cycling) attempted a chase with no luck on the final circuits around Beverley.
Lauryssen would take the full points and bonus seconds available at the second intermediate sprint of the day on the first crossing of the finish line, but his efforts would come to naught as the teams of Fix All Quick-Step and Decathlon continued to chase and catch the Belgian on the final lap, ensuring the stage would end in the anticipated sprint.
It was here that Kooij came around the field with a powerful sprint to edge out his key rival for the week, Merlier, with the Belgian seemingly suffering a crucial issue with his chain in the closing metres while the Dutchman had no such issues to convincingly raise his arms in triumph.
Lewis Askey (NSN Cycling Team) finished safely in the peloton to retain the lead of the race and his 12 second advantage over Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates - XRG), with the deciding general classification stages still to come over the weekend. Michal Schuran’s breakaway efforts see him grow his lead in the King of the Mountains classification with his lead now at 16 points, however his advantage is far from comfortable as stage four approaches, with many points available from its array of category one and two climbs.
Merlier can take consolation from his second place on the stage by moving into the lead of the points classification, as he was wearing the jersey in place of race leader Askey today who had previously led the category. The Belgian is equal on points with stage victor Kooij, but leads the Dutchman on virtue of his 14 second advantage on the general classification, while Lauryssen took home the combativity award for the stage following his final circuit heroics.
Following his victory, Kooij said:
“It’s always nice to get a win, especially after yesterday to try and really do my sprint at the right moment. With the headwind I really had to wait for the moment that I could find my way through.
“I think also in the end, the way we controlled, the boys got me into the final in a really perfect way. I’m really happy to take the win.”
Leader of the general classification Askey said:
“These two stages should have been relatively easy on paper for me to keep the jersey, but in the end they were anything but. With the wind we’ve had on both days, I’m pretty happy to have come out of that unscathed and ready to fight tomorrow.
“To be honest, for tomorrow, I’m in the best position at the moment, no one else is ahead of me, so all I have to do is follow. No one can beat me on time bonuses, I’ve just got to grit my teeth and not let the wheel go.”
The Lloyds Tour of Britain Men heads into the North Yorkshire and the North York Moors on Saturday as the race heads to Helmsley for the start before an afternoon finish in Leyburn. The race will conclude in the Scottish Borders on Sunday 6 September, with the village of Earlston hosting a stage for the first time. There the general classification will be decided, after two demanding and relentless final stages, and the winner of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Men will be awarded.

Stage 3 map
Thursday, September 3: Stage 2, Boston - Skegness, 181.1 km

Tim Merlier wins stage two.
Bill & Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, Vol 1: 1903 - 1975 is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.
Weather at the finish city of Skegness at 1:40 PM, local time: 22C (71F), cloudy, with the wind from the west-southwest at 31 km/hr (19 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.
The race: Midway into the stage Vilmer Ekman (Lucky Sport Cycling Team) abandoned.
Here's the race reort from stage winner Tim Merlier's Team Soudal Quick-Step:
Soudal Quick-Step delivered a masterclass in teamwork on Stage 2 of the Tour of Britain, setting up Tim Merlier for his first victory in the race.
A large split formed in the peloton during the stage, with The Wolfpack riders playing a key role in establishing and maintaining the gap. Together with other teams, the group was kept within striking distance, with the difference fluctuating around the 30-second to one-minute mark for a long period.
The team continued to control the race, with Ilan Van Wilder, Pascal Eenkhoorn, Jasper Stuyven and Laurenz Rex, as the finish approached, also responding perfectly when Florian Vermeersch made a late move inside the final 10 kilometres.
With the escape brought back, the focus turned to the sprint. Soudal Quick-Step kept Tim Merlier protected and perfectly positioned in the closing kilometres before Jasper Stuyven delivered a textbook lead-out. Merlier finished the job in style, taking the win and claiming his first-ever Tour of Britain stage victory.
“It was a complicated day with the echelons, but we all knew that was going to be the case from the start. And the whole team did a fantastic job executing that plan. The last 80 kilometres were very fast, but we stayed focused on keeping our group ahead."
"Then we heard that it was going to be a very fast run-in to the finish, so I tried to stay in a good position until the final 250 metres. I decided to take a gamble and launch my sprint from there. I felt I had a good acceleration, so I’m really happy to take the win, especially in our special Fix ALL Quick-Step jerseys”, Tim explained after the stage.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and GC leader Lewis Askey's NSN Cycling Team.
The 25-year-old Lewis Askey delivered the biggest win of his career and his first in NSN colors when he stormed to victory on day one of the Tour of Britain. Askey’s dominant performance, which saw him blast away from the rest of the breakaway on the uphill finish, sees him move into the iconic leader’s red jersey.
Askey was ecstatic after the finish line as he celebrated with his teammates and family, saying: “I’ve been pretty close quite a few times this year, like at nationals. I’ve had a couple of seconds, a couple of thirds. So to come away with a win and put my hands up in the air, I think that’s why I ride my bike. I’m so happy to be able to do that again this year.”
While Askey’s strong form is undeniable, today’s win was a tactical game with Brit outnumbered in the leading group.
“To be honest, it was a really hard race for me to manage because I was solo in the front group where the other teams had two guys,” adds Askey. “So it was a really difficult one for me to manage, and I just kind of had to pick the guys that I thought would bring it back and just count the numbers that were going each time.
“I knew if I got to the last time of the climb, I had been feeling really good for the last week or so, and knew I’d have the legs to be able to do a good effort and at least be close to the win. I just needed to get myself in that position. I thought it had nearly gone at the end, but yeah, I managed to have the legs to bring it back in the final.”
It may be the opening day but today’s explosive stage is set to have a big impact on the General Classification which Askey leads with a nine-second margin.
“I came here with an eye on the GC in the first place,” explains Askey. “I think I knew that this stage was going to kind of decide the whole week. I think a lot of people maybe didn’t expect there to be as big time gaps, but we did. I had to perform today to show that I was capable to come and ride for GC. So yeah, I’m quite happy with that.”
