Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

The race: Here's the report from second-place Jordi Meeus' Bora-hansgrohe team.

In northern France the GP Denain took place today. After a strong effort from Team Ineos the peloton broke into pieces and an early break was caught already with over 65km remaining. 12 riders formed a first group while the bunch was one minute back. But different teams worked to keep the bunch in contention. On the final 25km one rider after the other lost contact to the leading group and only three riders remained at the front. The bunch just managed to catch the leaders on the last kilometer and Rudi Selig did a perfect lead-out for Jordi Meeus. Also Jordi’s timing was perfect today and the young Belgium was just beaten by centimeters from Jasper Philipsen in the end.

"It was a tough battle over the cobbles, I had to suffer a lot and we just managed to catch the leaders on the last kilometer. Rudi did a great lead-out and I could launch my sprint from a perfect position. Actually, I thought I made it, but Philipsen just pushed his wheel in front on the final meters, he was super-fast on the last 20m. Still, I am happy today with the result.” – Jordi Meeus

Jasper Philipsen

Jasper Philipsen is first across the line.

"It was a hard race and the pavé sectors had their impact as well. To be honest we had a team here without huge experience in these kinds of races and we also lost Ide early with a puncture in the absolute wrong moment. When Ineos attacked we haven’t been in a position to react which was really dangerous as the group was very strong. Also Rudi had a puncture then, but he managed to come back. When all came back together in the sprint, Rudi did an amazing job to set up Jordi. Also he did a perfect sprint, but Philipsen is almost unreal at the moment and the second place today feels almost like a win.” – André Schulze, Sports Director
