77th edition: Wednesday, March 29, 2023

Dwars door Vlaanderen podium history | 2022 edition | 2024 edition | Course map & profile | Photos | Start list

Roeselare - Waregem, 183.5 km

A perfectly timed late attack and the horsepower to make it stick give Christophe Laporte his second win this week after winning Gent-Wevelgem.

Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Tour of Flanders: The Inside Story - The rocky roads of the Ronde van Vlaanderen is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Waregem at 1:15 PM, local time: 14C (56F), cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 21 km/hr (11 mph). There is a 4% chance of rain during the afternoon.

The race: Four riders did not start: Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost), Kevin Vanmaerke (Team DSM), Andrii Ponomar (Arkéa-Samsic) & Geoffrey Soupe (TotalEnergies).

Here's the organizer's race summary:

Three days after Gent-Wevelgem, it was another win for Christophe Laporte. After attacking in the final kilometres, the Frenchman took the win in Dwars door Vlaanderen solo. He took the win ahead of Lazkano and Powless.

No rain in Roeselare at the start of the 77th edition of Dwars door Vlaanderen. 183.5 km were on the programme. After about 20 km of racing, the early breakaway was a fact. Gidich (Astana Qazaqstan Team), Lazkano (Movistar Team), Zukowsky (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team), Vanhoof (Team Flanders-Baloise), Heinschke (Team DSM) and Kristoff (Uno-X Pro Cycling Team) got away.

The peloton rolls out from Roeselare.

The riders reeled off a particularly fast first hour of racing. With 47 kilometres covered in the first hour, the breakaway riders' lead also quickly grew to 3-4 minutes. At the top of the first climb of Côte de Trieu, it was Trek-Segafredo that set the pace in the peloton. That acceleration meant the breakaway also saw its lead dwindle and the peloton broke into pieces.

The succession of hills and cobbled sections meant that first Zukowsky and Gidich had to leave the role at the front. Then, on the Kanarieberg, things also went too fast for Heinschke and Vanhoof. In the peloton, Benoot's (Jumbo-Visma) moment had come. He accelerated and was joined by Hermans (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Laporte (Jumbo-Visma).

At the front, Vanhoof and Heinschke were able to rejoin Kristoff and Lazkano. In the background, it was Benoot who accelerated a second time on the Côte de Trieu. The new chasing group? Benoot and Laporte (Jumbo-Visma), Powless (EF Educsation - Easypost), Küng and Madouas (Groupama-FDJ), Narvaez (INEOS Grenadiers) and Honoré (EF Education-Easypost). The lead of the breakaway riders, where Vanhoof and Heinschke meanwhile had to let go again, dwindled to under half a minute.

The peloton was not completely beaten in the full finale either. At 10 km from the finish, the leading duo, the chasers and the peloton were within half a minute. With about 6 km to go, at the final passage over Herlegemstraat, the chasers joined Kristoff and Lazkano. An immediate attack followed at the front, as the peloton was not far.

At 4km from the finish, it was Laporte who went full on the attack and went solo in search of the win in Waregem. Victory was within reach and the Frenchman rounded off his attack with a strong solo. In the closing kilometres, it was Powless and Lazkano who accelerated in turn. Lazkano eventually took second place after a full day on the attack, ahead of Powless and with the sprinting peloton in his wheel.

It was Laporte's second classic win in just three days, as the Frenchman had also previously triumphed in Gent-Wevelgem.
