About Fabio Aru:

Retired racer Fabio Aru (born July 3, 1990 in Sardinia) raced professionally from 2012 through 2021. In that time he not only won Spain’s Grand Tour, the Vuelta a España, he also won stages in the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia.

Aru was an excellent climber and as a result, focused most of his competitive energies on stage races. His reward was not only that Vuelta win in 2015, he also earned a third in the 2014 Giro and came in second in the 2015 Giro. His best performance in the Tour de France was a fifth place in 2017.

Aru has worn the GC leader’s jersey in all three Grand Tours. His best single-day race performance came in 2017 when he became the Italian National Champion. After 2017, Aru was unable to attain a major win, his best performances coming in 2021, his year of retirement when he was second in both the Vuelta a Burgos and the Sibiu Cycling Tour.

During those successful six years of racing (2012–2017) Aru raced for the Astana team. In 2018 he moved over to the UAE Team Emirates where he won nothing of note. 2021, his final season, was with the Qhubeka-Assos team.
