July 28 Bike Racing News

The 200 points the UCI awarded Vincenzo Nibali for winning the Tour de France weren't enough to elevate him to first place in the UCI World Tour rankings. Alberto Contador still has a fifteen point lead. Spain and Movistar lead the country and team rankings.

Geraint Thomas has signed to ride for team Sky another two years, through 2016. The UCI number-30-ranked rider has been riding for Sky since the team's inception in 2010. Thomas won the 2014 Bayern Rundfahrt (Tour of Bavaria). We should know about other Sky signings such as Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome this week.

Vincenzo Nibali's Tour victory caused one tradition to be upended. La Gazzetta dello Sport, normally in pink, was yellow to celebrate Nibali's Tour win.

Tour de France Prize money: De Telegraaf reports the following prize money distribution:

In 2014 The Tour was awarding 22,500 Euros total per stage and 450,000 Euros to the overall winner.

The green and polka dot jerseys were worth 25,000 Euros and the white jersey awarded to the best rider under 25 earned Thibaut Pinot 20,000 Euros. Winning the Team Classification earned Ag2r 50,000 Euros.

Currently a Euro is worth $1.34 USD and 0.791 British Pounds.
