Weather at the finish city of Napoli at 2:35 PM, local time: 19C (66F), motly cloudy, with the wind from the west-southwest at 24 km/hr (15 mph). There is a 7% chance of rain.

The stage: A short and flat stage. The first section runs along the Tyrrhenian coast as far as Salerno, where the route climbs to Cava de’ Tirreni (the day’s only categorized climb) before entering the plain surrounding Mount Vesuvius. After Nola, the final 70 km take place entirely within urban areas, passing through a nearly unbroken succession of built-up zones (and thus featuring the typical obstacles and street furniture associated with urban environments). Before entering Naples, the route covers approximately 20 km on a highway-style arterial road. The finale takes place within the city of Naples, on wide, paved roads.

Final Kilometers
The final 3 km are virtually straight, running alongside the port. At 650 m from the finish line, a left-hand bend leads onto the slight uphill gradient (4%) of Via Acton, paved with large stone slabs. At 400 m from the finish, two right-hand bends lead onto the final straight, a wide (8-meter) stretch paved with cobblestones.

The race: Felix Engelhardt (Jayco AlUla) did not start. That left a starting peloton of 169 riders.

Here's the race report from third-place Paul Magnier's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

Napoli – the city of Parthenope, Paolo Sorrentino, pizza margherita, the most decorated Southern Italian football club, and Vesuvius – welcomed the Giro d’Italia Thursday for what promised to be a sprinters’ showdown. The stage was flat and quiet until the last kilometers, when the fast men’s teams made their way to the front of the peloton to position their leaders ahead of the tricky final kilometer.

The start line in Paestum.

As if the uphill drag to the line, a tight corner and the cobbles weren’t enough, some drops of rain complicated matters just as the bunch arrived there, which led to a crash that disrupted the sprint. Only two riders escaped the incident, and one of these was Jasper Stuyven, who took second on the stage behind Davide Ballerini (XDS Astana) for his fourth career podium at the Corsa Rosa.

Despite being held up by that crash, Paul Magnier staged a fantastic comeback to take third in Napoli and increase his margin in the maglia ciclamino standings, where he has a 66-point advantage over the next rider – a lead that can make him dream of winning this prestigious jersey.

Sixty kilometers to go and a break of four riders has a 40-second lead. They are: Luca Vergallito (ADC), Manuele Tarozzi (BCS), Martin Marcellusi (BCS), Mattia Bais (PTV)

“I think I could have gotten a better result if not for that crash. The whole team worked hard and Jasper put me in a perfect position, but sadly, it was impossible to avoid that pile-up. I was still able to sprint and take third, but there’s some frustration after today’s outcome. On the other hand, I’m happy with the fact I cemented my place at the top of the points classification”, Paul explained after the sprinters’ last opportunity on the first week of the Giro.
