The Story of the Tour de France, vol.1 South Salem Cycleworks frames Melanoma: It Started With a Freckle
Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle

David L. Stanley's masterful telling of his bout with skin cancer Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Cosenza at 2:45 PM, local time: 22C (72F), sunny, with the wind from the south-southwest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The stage: Short and fast stage, featuring a long intermediate climb that is not particularly demanding. Start in Catanzaro and head towards Lamezia Terme with no significant elevation difficulties, then continue along the Tyrrhenian coast (SS18) on wide, gently undulating roads. After San Lucido, the climb of Cozzo Tunno begins (linked at the summit with Passo della Crocetta from Paola). The climb is almost 15 km long but without major gradients. A long descent follows to the Crati plain, where a slight uphill leads to the finish in Cosenza.

Final kilometers
Final 3 km in an urban setting with some bends in the central section, always on wide roads. The route rises very slightly up to the hump of the bridge over the Crati. A series of wide curves then leads into the finishing straight. Final straight of 450 m at 3.7%, on 8 m wide asphalt.

The race: Wilco Kelderman (Visma | Lease a Bike) did not start. He team posted, "Unfortunately, Wilco Kelderman will not start stage 4 of the Giro d’Italia following his crash a couple of days ago, as he is still experiencing lingering effects from the crash."

The Giro is now on Italian soil. Stage four gets rolling in the town of Catanzaro. RCS photo

Well into the stage, before the big climb, Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) abandoned. He had been involved in a crash in stage one. Later Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Intermarché) also quit the race.

Here's the stage four report from stage winner Jhonatan Narvaez's UAE Team Emirates-XRG:

UAE Team Emirates-XRG enjoyed a superb day at the Giro d’Italia as Jhonatan Narváez powered to victory on today’s stage 4 from Catanzaro to Cosenza (138km) after an explosive finale, while teammate Jan Christen animated the closing kilometres with a late attack and moved into the maglia bianca as best young rider.

The key move came inside the final 2km when Christen launched a sharp acceleration on the technical run-in. The move forced the main favourites onto the defensive and set the scene for Narvaez’s sprint.

Stage four gets rolling in the ancient town of Catanzaro. Some historians believe it was an ancient Greek colony.

The young Swiss rider’s attack softened up the opposition perfectly for Narváez, who responded moments later with a powerful acceleration of his own.

In his first race since breaking several vertabrae at the Tour Down Under in January, Narváez took a convincing win in the sprint ahead of Orluis Aular (Movistar) who finished second and Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) in third who now wears the Maglia Rosa ahead of stage 5.

The wonderful adventure in the pink jersey has come to its inevitable end for Thomas Silva. Here he is being dropped on the big Cozzo Tunno climb.

Behind, Christen crossed safely among the leading riders, earning enough time to move into the white jersey classification as best young rider of the race and second overall on GC at just 4 seconds from the lead.

The Ecuadorian’s victory marks a breath of fresh air for UAE Team Emirates-XRG in the opening week of the Giro, after several casualties in the first stages in Bulgaria.

Jhonatan Narváez:
“This victory means a lot for me. I want to send thanks to my family, my wife and my team who have been a great support during all this time I was out injured and preparing for this race. Obviously I would also like to dedicate this to my teammates who crashed on stage 2 and are no longer here in the race. I wish them a good recovery.

"In the finale I took the corner at 700m to go in a really good position and then it was just all about the legs in the sprint. I’m really glad I could deliver this victory.”
