The Story of the Tour de France, vol.1 South Salem Cycleworks frames Melanoma: It Started With a Freckle

Weather at the finish city of Napoli at 2:20 PM, local time: 21C (69F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is a 24% chance of rain, growing to 45% at 4:00 PM.

The stage: This is the longest stage of the Giro 2025. Starting in Potenza, the route heads into Irpinia through the Lucanian mountains, climbing the long ascent of Monte Carruozzo before briefly joining a high-speed road. Once in the Naples province, the route winds through urban areas with usual traffic obstacles like roundabouts, medians, and pedestrian islands. The final 45 km are fully urban, passing through a continuous string of towns. Road surfaces are mostly good despite some rather long sections of porphyry cobbles. About 20 km of motorway (Italian superstrada) are covered before entering Naples on wide asphalt roads.

Final kilometres - The last 3 km include a slight climb over cobbles followed by 2 km of flat roads leading to Via Caracciolo. The final straight is 900m on 9-metre-wide asphalt.

The race: Alessandro Pinarello (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) did not start. He suffered a scaphoid fracture of his left hand in Wednesday's crash.

Here's the report from third-place Paul Magnier's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

The city of Paolo Sorrentino and of the current Serie A leaders, Napoli first hosted a stage finish in 1909.  It was the inaugural edition of the race, the once mighty Ottoman Empire was more than a decade away from dissolving, and Giovanni Rossignoli emerged as the fastest from a small group after 242 kilometers and four climbs.

On Thursday, the peloton returned there at the end of this year’s longest stage – 227 kilometers – and this time it was a bunch sprint, which was won by Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck). It was the last day before the race’s first summit finish, and for that reason, the peloton took it easy behind the small breakaway animating the stage that comprised four climbs, the last of which came around 80 kilometers from the finish.

The race wasn’t quiet, on the contrary; due to the rain and the slippery roads, a huge crash took place with 70 kilometers to go, taking out of the race a couple of riders. Soudal Quick-Step’s Josef Cerny, Gianmarco Garofoli and Paul Magnier were involved in that pile-up that prompted the organisers to briefly neutralize the stage, but fortunately continued and concluded the race. Despite this important setback, Magnier still featured in the finale and showed a strong turn of speed in the last 300 meters, sprinting to third for his first Grand Tour podium – a result from which the Frenchman will take a lot of heart.

The crash as GC leader Mads Pedersen (pink shorts) approaches the carnage. Team Lid-Trek Tweeted: "It looks like we’ve managed to pass through the massive crash unscathed."

Here is my crash update:

With about 65 kilometers to go there was a big crash in the peloton. Both Jai Hindley (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), Juri Holmann (Alpecin-Deceuninck) & Josef Cerny (Soudal Quick-Step) had to abandon. The stage was neutralized and then scheduled to resume when the peloton reached km 166.5.

That looks like Primoz Roglic talking to a Giro official as the riders get themselves up, sorted, and going again. RCS photo

The Giro posted: "No points or bonus seconds will be awarded at the RedBull KM, or at the finish. The classifications will be set at the moment of the crash. There will be no time limits. The stage win will be disputed in Napoli."
