Story of the Tour de France Volume 2

The race: Here is the report from GC leader Filippo Ganna's Team INEOS Grenadiers.

An encouraging start to the Giro d’Italia continued on stage two as Filippo Ganna retained the race lead, while Geraint Thomas moved up to third overall.

The action resumed in Sicily, with a fast pace and a punchy finish ensuring the INEOS Grenadiers had to be alert in supporting their leaders.

Thomas monitored the moves in the final kilometre but was content to finish 11th, moving up a spot on the general classification. Ganna was also able to finish in a reduced peloton in Agrigento to maintain his 22-second overall lead.

On the final climb it was Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) who sprung clear, holding off Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) at the line to win the stage.

The team set a tempo early in the stage, with Rohan Dennis and Salvatore Puccio, riding on home roads, working hard on the front. More teams eventually arrived to the fore, motivated by a potential stage win. Ben Swift, Jhonatan Narvaez and finally Tao Geoghegan Hart were on hand to help Thomas through the run-in.

Filippo Ganna:
“The climb was really hard but not too steep. The peloton pulled really hard at the finish and it was a big problem to follow. But I was able to conserve the jersey and tomorrow I will work for the team. Tomorrow on Etna is a really hard day and it can decide the GC for the next few days. I’m here to support G and I’m happy to support him.

“[Being in pink] is really nice. To have this jersey on my shoulders gave me the power to finish the stage. To have it one day more is great. I wish I could spend more time in the jersey.”
