Milano - Sanremo, 293 km

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 1: 1909 - 1970 is available as an audiobook here. For the print and Kindle eBook versions, just click on the Amazon link on the right.
The race:
Weather at the finish city of Sanremo at 12:35 PM, local time: 16C (60F), fair, with the wind from the northeast at 27 km/hr (16 mph). No rain is forecast.
The course: Milano-Sanremo runs along the classic route that for more than 110 years has connected Milan with the western Riviera through Pavia, Ovada, the Passo del Turchino that leads into Genua Voltri. From there, it rolls westwards through Varazze, Savona, Albenga to Imperia and San Lorenzo al Mare where, after the classic sequence of the Capi (Mele, Cervo and Berta), the atheltes will deal with the two climbs added in recent decades: the Cipressa (1982) and the Poggio di Sanremo (1961). The Cipressa is just over 5.6 km long with a gradient of 4.1%. The highly testing descent leads back down to SS 1 Aurelia.
Final kilometres:
The ascent of Poggio di Sanremo begins with 9 km remaining to the finish (3.7 km, average gradient less than 4%, maximum 8% in the segment before getting to the top of the climb). The road is slightly narrower, with 4 hairpin turns in the first 2 km. The descent is testing, on asphalt switchback roads, narrow at points and with twists and turns as far as the junction with SS 1 Aurelia. The final part of the descent enters urban Sanremo. The last 2 km are on long, straight urban roads. There is a left-hand bend on a roundabout 850 m from the finish line. The last bend, leading into the home straight in Via Roma, is 750 m from the finish line.
We posted the Milan-Sanremo team reports here.
The race: After a ten kilometer ride that took the riders out of the center of Milan, Milano-Sanremo 2022 was officially under way at 10:20. Robert Stannard (Alpecin-Fenix) did not start.

At kilometer 195 there were seven riders (Yevgeniy Gidich, Artyom Zakharov, Alessandro Tonelli, Filippo Tagliani, Ricardo Zurita, Samuele Rivi, Diego Pablo Sevilla & Filippo Conca) 7min 2sec ahead of the peloton.
After four hours of racing, the average speed was 44.2 km/hr. The riders now had a tailwind. The Milano-Sanremo record is Gianni Bugno's 1990 win at 45.8 km/hr.

In fact, here's the break on the coast. RCS photo
And with 74 kilometers to go, the peloton was 5min 29sec behind. RCS photo
The gap kept getting smaller. With 44 kilometers left to race, the break was 4min 12sec in front of a peloton that was getting organized for the final dash down the Via Aurelia to Sanremo. Peter Sagan's TotalEnergies team moved up to the front. The riders were close to going over the three famous coastal climbs, the Capo Mele, Capo Cervo and Capo Berta.
With 34 kilometers left to race the riders in the break started attacking each other and the gap came down to 3min 19sec. In the peloton INEOS Grenadiers rider Thomas Pidcock was dropped on the Capo Berta.
Just before the Cipressa climb Peter Sagan had to change bikes. To make his life even more miserable Jumbo-Visma & UAE Team Emirates hammered up the climb and really stretched out the pack. The breakaway riders were less than a minute off the front.
The situation with 15 kilometers to go and the Cipressa climb in the rear-view mirror: Alessandro Tonelli and Samuele Rivi are 15 seconds ahead of the main peloton. Several highly-regarded riders are out of contention: Sagan, Pidcock, Jackobsen and Kristoff.
On the Poggio: Tonelli and Rivi were caught and shortly thereafter Tadej Pogacar attacked. He attacked a total of three times, but was unable to shake the other riders.
Then Matej Mohoric attacked on the descent and was able to keep a small gap to the line.
Matej Mohoric can sit up and enjoy his stunning win. RCS Sport photo
