Story of the Tour de France

Liège-Bastogne-Liège
Sunday, April 27, 2003

World Cup Round Five. 285.5 km. Lance Armstrong is touted as the favorite for this tough race. He has made it plain that he wants to win it. Everyone from Eddy Merckx to Telekom's Matthias Kessler say Lance is the man to beat. Saeco's Di Luca and Lampre's Casagrande are in terrific form right now. Rebellin, although badly injured and taped up, will give it a go as well. Michael Boogerd should be a real contender. It should be a great race. Here, thanks to La Gazzetta Dello Sport, are the 10 climbs:

1. Km 81: Cote Saint-Roch, 1.5 km @ 7.4%
2. Km 153.8: Cote de Wanne, 2.8 km @ 4.9%
3. Km 170: Cote de Stockeu, 2.5 km @ 9.6%
4. Km 175: Cote de Wanneranval, 1.4 km @ 10.7%
5. Km 194: Cote du Rosier, 4 km @ 5.9%
6. Km 206: Cote de la Vecquee, 3.2 km @ 7.8%
7. Km 223: Cote de la Redoute, 2.3 km @ 7%
8. Km 229: Cote de Sprimont, 1.5 km @ 3.3%
9. Km 244: Cote du Sart-Tilman, 3.7 km @ 5.9%
10. Km 253: Cote de Saint-Nicolas, 0.9 km @ 6.7%

Podium history of Liège-Bastogne-Liège

Axel Merckx, then Lance Armstong tried to get away in the closing kilometers, but were reeled in by the pack. On the St. Nicolas, Scarponi, then Boogerd attacked, with Hamilton and others closing on him. Hamilton then attacked and made it stick, coming in alone.
