Matej Mohoric beats Matteo Trentin for the stage win.

Story of the Giro d'Italia, volume 1

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 1: 1909 - 1970 is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Bilzen at 2:00 PM, local time: 20C (68F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west-southwest at 21 km/hr (13 mph). There is a 30% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from GC third-place Yves Lampaert's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Yves Lampaert took his best result ever in a World Tour stage race after the Renewi Tour came to a conclusion Sunday afternoon in Bilzen. By doing so, the 32-year-old from Hulste became the fifth different rider in the history of our team to finish on the overall podium of the competition, just one week from a strong outing at the BEMER Cyclassics, where only 75 meters separated him from the win.

It was a complicated final day of racing in Belgium, with many hills spread out over the 187.3km course and a finishing circuit that the riders deemed too dangerous, and as a result stopped the race with more than 80 kilometers to go to protest about this. After holding talks with the organisers, it was decided that the time would be taken at the foot of the Keiberg, with five kilometers remaining, and that there would be no bonus seconds at the Green Kilometer and on the finish line.

This didn’t stop the Soudal Quick-Step boys from showing their offensive intentions on the last climb, both Yves and Florian Sénéchal trying to get a gap. The group that emerged from the peloton following these accelerations reacted, but the Frenchman made another move, which despite his best efforts was reeled in. The stage came down to a small sprint, won by Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious), while the general classification was sealed by Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates).

“I’m happy with my third spot on the standings. After a difficult Tour de France, this result gives me a lot of confidence, especially on such a hard race, with many top riders. It was correct to neutralise the final kilometers of today’s stage, because it was very narrow there. This made things safer for us in the end”, explained Yves. “Our team did its best and we can be content with the week we had here.”

Weather at the finish city of Peer at 1:30 PM, local time: 21C (69F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 19 km/hr (12 mph). There is a 5% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Sam Welsford's Team dsm-firmenich.

Biding their time before taking responsibility in the finale, Team dsm-firmenich produced a brilliant lead-out and took a great sprint win with Sam Welsford into the town of Peer.

An air of nervousness was over the peloton at the Renewi Tour this afternoon but the potential crosswind threat never prevailed. It did see the early break caught with 60 kilometres to go, as Team dsm-firmenich navigated the local circuit well, looking out for each other and bringing finisher Welsford into the finale in the best place possible.

On the last lap, everyone on the team executed their job perfectly, ensuring the team avoided any danger on the narrow roads before stringing things out. Last lead-out man Niklas Märkl positioned Welsford in the first five three wheels in sight of the line, before the Australian kicked powerfully and lunged to the line; taking a superb win with a bike throw.

A delighted Welsford said: "It was very tight at the line, I didn’t know who got it. It was a long sprint, bit of uphill and headwind all the way to the line. I think everyone had the idea to try and go early and surprise Jasper. The local lap was very narrow and everyone knew it was going to be a big fight. You could see the nerves and the tension rising as the laps went on, but luckily enough the boys looked after me so well today. Full credit to them, they looked after me and kept me at the front in the narrow section, then delivered me in a great position with the lead-out.

"It’s been a good year so far with the team and I’m happy to take my first WorldTour win. I had a tough period at the Tour, it was a big step up but we learnt a lot and that’s helped here. I’m keen to get stuck into the next opportunities and do my best for the team."

Team dsm-firmenich coach Matt Winston added: “We’ve had some honest discussions here and we’ve done a few sprints where we’ve looked to improve on. Today I would say the guys have done a fantastic job. They took responsibility, looked after Sam, brought him as fresh as possible into the final and he finished off the job in a really nice way. I think we can be very happy with that.”

Story of the Tour de France Volume 2

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, Vol 2: 1976 - 2018 is available in print, Kindle eBook & Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Geraardsbergen at 3:05 PM, local time: 21C (69F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the east at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is a 12% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from GC second-place Yves Lampaert's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Yves Lampaert confirmed the strong form he is enjoying in this second part of the season with another impressive display on the third stage of the Renewi Tour. Taking in more than a dozen climbs, including two and a half ascents of the iconic Muur-Kapelmuur, the race between Aalter and Geraardsbergen came to life with more than 50 kilometers to go, when a couple of riders got away from the peloton, catching and dropping the original escapees as they put themselves at the front of the race.

Soudal Quick-Step had both Florian Sénéchal and Yves Lampaert there, and the latter made the cut when this strong group fragmented as they tackled the brutal slopes of the Muur for the second time. Eight riders moved into the lead, and Yves was one of the strongest there, taking some long pulls that helped them increase their advantage over the peloton to more than half a minute. The Belgian got involved also at the Green Kilometer sprints, taking a bonus seconds, as the attackers kept working in order to hold off the chasers.

Despite the bunch making up ground rapidly in the final kilometers, Lampaert still had enough left to clinch a top ten place on this stage won by Mike Teunissen (Intermarche-Circus-Wanty) – a result that elevated him to second on the general classification with two days left at the Renewi Tour.

“It was very hard today. I gave my best, but in the finale I found myself a bit isolated against two guys from UAE and two from Lotto. I did everything I could and I am content with my effort. We’ll just see what the next stages – and especially the one of Sunday – will bring, now that I’m second in the GC”, Yves said.

Joshua Tarling on his way to winning the stage and taking the GC lead.

Weather at the race city of Sluis at 1:35 PM. local time: 22C (72F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 10 km/hr (7 mph). During the afternoon there is a 76% chance of rain.

The race: First rider is scheduled to start at 2:02 PM.

Here's the report from winner Joshua Tarling's Team INEOS Grenadiers:

Josh Tarling powered to a dominate time trial victory in stage two of the Renewi Tour.

The 19 year-old set off early in the day, and clocked a time of 15’05” across the line to put him straight into the hot seat.

As the rest of the field rolled in, none could better the British National Champion’s effort.

Strong rides also came from Luke Plapp (11th) and Michal Kwiatkowski (14th), to make it three Grenadiers in the top 15.

The win also puts Tarling into the leader’s jersey, ahead of lumpy stage three that sees the riders tackle the mythical Muur van Geraardsbergen.

Reaction:
“I’m so happy, I think we did super good in the team, I’ve been super supported with it and I’m super happy.”

"I thought I started fast, and then I heard their splits and I started panicking so I just tried to get everything out that I could, and I think it worked well with the wind.”

“I’ll always see how well I can go on GC, but we have other super talents in the team, so we have options - everyone can win this race, we have a super strong team so we’ll see what happens.”

Weather at the finish city of Ardooie at 1:35 PM, local time: 24C (76F), sunny, with the wind from the northwest at 3 km/hr (2 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Tim Merlier's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Tim Merlier was maybe the fastest sprinter in the final meters of the opening stage, but despite the incredible power he unleashed, the Belgian Champion missed out on what would have been his ninth victory of the season after running out of road in Ardooie.

Despite being completely flat, the 182.9km stage was a nervous one, and it came as no surprise that multiple crashes occurred on the last of the three local circuits that the peloton had to tackle. Fortunately, none of our riders was involved in these incidents, and with the help of his Soudal Quick-Step teammates, Merlier remained well positioned at the front and could contest the bunch sprint.

“The finale was very hectic, which was normal given that all the sprinters were quite fresh. The squad did a very good job and worked hard the entire day but at the end you get punished for the small mistakes. Despite this, the morale is strong and I’m already looking forward to Saturday, when we hope to have another mass gallop”, Tim explained after the stage.

It was a tricky finale also for Yves Lampaert. The Belgian, who last Sunday came so close to winning the Bemer Cyclassics, punctured with ten kilometers to go, but thanks to some fierce chasing, he made it back in the group just in time and made sure of not losing any valuable seconds ahead of the very important individual time trial in Sluis.
