Story of the Tour de France Volume 2

The race: Here's the report from third-place Tom Dumoulin's Jumbo-Visma team:

Tom Dumoulin has finished third on the last day of the Benelux Tour. The 30-year-old Dutchman had to let go on the penultimate climb of the Muur van Geraardsbergen, but came back and rode away on the last climb. This resulted in third place, behind Mohoric, who had escaped earlier, and overall winner Colbrelli.

The stage was characterised by a very high average speed. A group of eleven riders escaped after a long run-up, but they never really got away. The Muur of Geraardsbergen caused an explosion in the race. It was every man for himself, but the consequence of this course was that mergers took place. Dumoulin came back and immediately hit the pedals. Only the two riders of Bahrain-Victorious proved to be stronger. In the general classification Dumoulin finished ninth and Mike Teunissen tenth.

Dumoulin was happy with his third place. “We had the stage under control. We kept it short so Mike and I could ride the final. We did that well as a team. Unfortunately we both lacked the power to put our mark on the stage. With a bit of luck we came together for the last climb and then I went full throttle. In the end, I could get the third place. A pleasant way to end this week.”

Sports director Arthur van Dongen was proud. “It was a tough day. Everyone felt their legs after seven days of racing. We planned to be in the main breakaway and Dylan and Olav put a lot of energy into that. In the end a strong breakaway of eleven riders got away on a tough part. Then we controlled the race. From then on there was a lot of racing on the local laps. We assumed it would merge at the front. Only Mohoric was too strong. Tom gave it his all on the last climb. We went for the highest possible in the stage; we have to be satisfied with third place.”

The race: Here's the stage six report from stage winner Sonny Colbrelli's Bahrain Victorious team.

Impressive day for Bahrain Victorious at the Benelux Tour. The longest and toughest stage on the menu (Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve > Houffalize207.6km) became the most spectacular and sweetest one so far for the team.

The riders faced a series of côtes in the Ardennes, especially in the final laps, including some steep climbs. The race was nervous immediately after the start with some attacks as the flat initial part was ideal to set a breakaway.

At 10 km Jonas Rickaert (Alpecin) and Geraint Thomas (Ineos) went into the move gaining a maximum of 7 minutes. But as expected, when the first of the 10 Côte on the menu came after about 100km, the race exploded.

With 49km to go as Thomas was got back, on the Côte Bois des Mointes Mohorič attacked, with Hirschi and Colbrelli joining him.

The leading trio continued their action while behind the peloton split. At 25km to go, a solo attack of Sonny Colbrelli turned out to be the winning move. With Mohorič stopping the chase, the Italian Champion maintained a substantial advantage (42 seconds) to storm to a tremendous solo victory. Behind him, a reduced chasing group sprinted for runner-up place, and to complete the team’s excellent work, Matej Mohorič took second place.

With today’s victory, Sonny Colbrelli also moved into the overall leader’s jersey, with an advantage of 51″ seconds to the Slovenian Champion, who sits in second place. That is a perfect scenario with only one stage to go.

Sonny Colbrelli: “It has probably been one of the hardest races of my life. With Matej, we attack in the first of the final laps, and Hirshi followed us. Then we agreed to try one time each. When it was up to me, I went that it was a bit early actually and I didn’t think to arrive alone. But I always kept a good tempo and never looked back. I’m so happy as I can say to have done something extraordinary. It never happened to me to win a race like this way. Tomorrow, let’s see how I will recover as today I spent a lot. But as a team, we also have Matej ready to fight for the GC”.

Rolf Aldag, Bahrain Victorious SD: “The goal of the day was to take a win, having the two strongest guys in the peloton like Sonny and Matej. It was great to see how Matej controlled the chase to give his teammate a good advantage to go also into the leader jersey today. The key to success was to believe in himself and ride aggressively, execute perfectly every move. Now we have also the leader’s jersey with one stage to go. We’re looking forward to it. We have more than an option. Mohorič can also have his opportunity. We don’t change our goals. We came here intending to win stages, and we went for it every day, and we will do the same tomorrow to defend and win the leader jersey”.

Friday, September 3: Stage 5, Riemst - Bilzen, 192.0 kilomters

Weather at the finish city of Bilzen at 2:30 PM, local time: 24C (76F), sunny, with the wind from the east at 14 km/hr (9mph). No rain is forecast.

Cycling's 50 Craziest Stories

The race: There were three notable abandons. Remco Evenepoel (Deceuinck-Quick Step) has ongoing stomach problems and did not start today's stage. Mitchell Docker (EF Education-Nippo) broke his elbow yesterday. Stage three winner Taco van der Hoorn also had to quit the race.

The official start was given to the peloton at 10:40 AM, local time.

Here's the report from stage winner Caleb Ewan's Lotto Soudal team:

Caleb Ewan took victory on stage five of the Benelux Tour with a superb showing of strength and power on the uphill finish in Bilzen. Italian champion Sonny Colbrelli hit out early but Ewan came past him in sight of the line to take his sixth victory of the season, his first since crashing out of the Tour de France. Stefan Küng took the leader’s jersey after race leader Stefan Bissegger was dropped in the final local lap.

“Once we did the first lap of the circuit, it looked like it would be very tough and then they started attacking quite early from the bunch which made the race actually very hard. I knew this was my last chance to win this week. I really wanted to do well, coming back from my crash. So, I’m really happy. Tomorrow is something for Tim and Phil”, explained Caleb Ewan.

“In the first three sprint stages there was always something that went wrong like a mechanical when the bunch split in the first stage or when my spokes were taken out with fifteen kilometres to go in another stage. I knew my form was there but I didn’t have the luck. On a finish like today it is more about strength than luck.”

In two weeks Caleb Ewan will start in the Tour of Luxemburg, the next race in his build-up to the World Championships.

“The season wasn’t what I wanted. I’m so motivated to make something out of it. A world title would really make my season. I trained really hard to come back. I was disappointed that I couldn’t be back in time for the Vuelta, but I stayed focused and knew the end goal would be the Worlds. The Benelux Tour and the Tour of Luxemburg are important steps in my process to get the top form. Winning a hard stage like today gives me a lot of confidence. It shows that I’m really on the right track and that my legs are coming. I still got time to improve. By the time the Worlds are there, I really should be in top shape”, concluded Caleb Ewan.

Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

The race: Here's the report from second-place Mads Pedersen's Trek-Segafredo team.

Mads Pedersen had a clear view of the white line and could taste victory.  The team had just given him a fantastic leadout. The last man in the Trek-Segafredo train, Jasper Stuyven, launched him perfectly. Even an early jump by Danny van Poppel could not deter him.  Mads powered past van Poppel with just the looming finish banner ahead.

But someone was coming up fast on his left. Within meters of the finish, Tim Merlier flew by, snatching what seemed like sure victory away.

A bunched sprint ending is a world like none other. You must be fearless, confident, and have a strong team for help. The preparation begins from kilometer zero and kicks into top gear in the chaotic last kilometers. You need skilled teammates to help you get into the best positioning to exert as little energy as possible and then fast legs.  And, often, you need luck.

“Another perfect lead-out from Edward (Theuns) and Jasper (Stuyven). I had to open the sprint when they started to pass on the right side. Sadly, it was a bit too open on the left side, so Tim could pass there and also pass me at the finish line.  When I go back home, I have to train a bit more in the sprints for next year,” said Mads, not satisfied with second.

“It was nice work from the team today,” continued Mads. “Charlie (Quarterman) did a really good job pulling from almost the beginning, and when we caught back the breakaway, he managed to fight back a few times and help a bit, so it was a really nice job from Charlie today,” he explained.

“The rest of the boys (Matteo Moschetti, Toms Skujins, Ryan Mullen) did a really good job in keeping us out of trouble – there are a lot of troubles in this race – but we didn’t crash, and they managed to deliver me, Jasper, and Edward to the front of the peloton in the deep finale,” he continued. “That was very nice work from them.”

Flawless teamwork. So, what could have been different? We put the question to Mads.

“A little bit faster legs would have been nice, but the rest was perfect,” he said bluntly, then added: “If Danny van Poppel could have kept a half-meter more to the left, it would have been nice because then I would have won the stage.”

There are times when the door is closed, you cannot even move, and times when, if it does open, it’s too late. For Merlier, the door opened in the last meters, and he had fast legs and enough road remaining to rocket past Mads.

The alignment was a little off in today’s sprint. If van Poppel was a little more towards the left barriers, Merlier would not get by, and the outcome would be different.

Today Merlier had lady luck on his side. Next time, Mads turn (we hope!).

Cycling's World Championships

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Taco van der Hoorn's Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert team.

The Dutchman of the Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux, already winner after a thrilling breakaway in the Giro d’Italia, repeated the feat on Wednesday in stage 3 of the Benelux Tour (2.WT, 30/08-5/09). Along with five other riders, Taco van der Hoorn broke away early on but never enjoyed much freedom, the maximum gap never even reached 3 minutes.

On an entirely flat course, the sprinter teams had every chance to compete for the honors at Hoogerheide, at the end of this 168 kilometer-long stage. However van der Hoorn breakaway kept resisting valiantly, even after losing a rider 95 kilometers from the finish.

The now quintet constantly battled against the peloton, and their perfect collaboration kept the gap at around one minute 10 kilometers from the finish. A sufficient lead to keep the peloton in check and compete for victory in a five-man sprint. Taco van der Hoorn launched his powerful effort 200 meters from the finish, with no one able to get past him. He grabs therefore his second win in the event and his second also this season. Danny van Poppel took eighth place on the stage, taking third place in the peloton’s sprint.

"It is fantastic when a plan comes together! When analyzing the parcours I discovered that this stage was perfect for a breakaway because of the small roads. At first, I missed the breakaway because I expected it to be formed on a large road instead of a small one. But thanks to the help of my teammates I managed to join the leaders. Actually the peloton could have known that it was dangerous to let us go, because the composition of our group was really strong. Riders like Durbridge are really powerful! But also tactically we were strong.

"We rode a good pace from the beginning and left something for the final. Our turns in the front were equally divided, so we used our energy optimally. I planned to make use of the little hill in the final kilometer to attack, but Battistella prevented me to do it. I wasn’t confident for the sprint, but thanks to good positioning and timing I managed to take the victory! I’m really happy!" - Taco van der Hoorn

Tuesday, August 31: Stage 2, Lelystad 11.1-kilometer individual time trial

Dirty Feet: Early days of the Tour de France

The race: Here's the report from second-place Edoardo Affini's Jumbo-Visma team.

Edoardo Affini has finished second in the eleven kilometre individual time trial in the Benelux Tour. In Lelystad, the Italian of Team Jumbo-Visma clocked a time of 12:23 and had to concede fifteen seconds to Stefan Bissegger. Dutch champion Tom Dumoulin finished in sixth place at twenty-three seconds.

For a long time it looked like Affini was on his way to his first win of the season, but he eventually had to settle for his third second place finish in a time trial this year. Earlier he was second in the opening time trial of the Giro and a few weeks later he was second in the Italian championship.

“I am of course disappointed with the result, but not with my performance”, Affini said. “I think I have done a good time trial. I was hopeful that I could possibly win the stage when other specialists went slower. In the end, fifteen seconds is a lot and I don’t have to reflect about whether I could have done things differently. I really gave everything I had; one guy was just faster. To finish among some of the best TT specialists today gives me confidence and a good feeling towards the European and World Time Trial Championship.”

Mike Teunissen, who started the time trial in fourth place overall, was not satisfied with his performance. “I had hoped to be able to ride a good time trial here. But I wasn’t good enough today. I did not have the right speed in the second part of the course and then you know you’re going to lose way too much time. That’s a pity, especially after I had good hopes yesterday. However, this gives a realistic picture of the balance of power. For the rest of the week, our tactics will not change. We have to gain time from now on and who knows, maybe we can still ride a good classification.”

Monday, August 30: Stage 1, Surhuisterveen - Dokkum, 169.6 km

Tiner Merlier

Weather at the finish city of Dokkum at 2:45 PM, local time: 19C (67F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the north at 26 km/hr (16 mph). There is just a 2% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from third-place Alvaro Hodeg's Deceuninck-Quick Step team.

Alvaro Hodeg continued to show the strong legs that have recently netted him wins at the Tour de l’Ain and GP Marcel Kint, finishing on the podium of the Benelux Tour flat stage 1, which was far from being a straightforward day in the saddle, as the strong crosswinds ripped the peloton to pieces.

Echelons

Plato's Apology

A group of around 30 men was left in the front with 40 kilometers to go, Deceuninck – Quick-Step being among the few teams to be well represented. Unfortunately, a couple of broken spokes in his front wheel just 29 kilometers from the finish saw recent Brussels Cycling Classic winner Remco Evenepoel drop out of the group, who continued to ride at a crazy pace, shedding riders out the back. Attacks soon came, just before the Golden Kilometer, and Kasper Asgreen was among those testing the waters with an acceleration that brought him a bonus second.

Despite some more attempts, the stage concluded in a reduced bunch sprint, where Alvaro Hodeg kicked out after being brought to the front by Stijn Steels, and took third place behind Tim Merlier (Alpecin-Fenix). It was the 24-year-old Colombian’s fifth top 3 finish of the season, one that puts him on the overall podium of the race ahead of the individual time trial. The second group, containing Evenepoel, arrived almost one minute later having reduced their original 1:30 deficit in the last five kilometers.

“Today we raced full gas from the start, it was an insane speed of over 48km/h and you could feel in that in the legs as we approached the finish, especially after a whole hour spent in the echelons, where you had to do your best to remain in the group. The legs were a bit empty and the headwind made things even more difficult, but I somehow managed to be in the top 3, which is a good result after such a hard stage”, Alvaro said.
