Les Woodland's book Tour of Flanders: The Inside Story - The rocky roads of the Ronde van Vlaanderen is available as an audiobook here. For the print and Kindle eBook versions, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

The race:

The 1908 Paris-Roubaix was 271 km long and raced at an average speed of 25.63 km/hr.

90 riders started, 27 classified finishers

Weather the week before the race was terrible, turning the roads into a mess.

There was cold rain, snow and sleet on race day.

Winnter Cyrille Van Houwaert arrived at the Roubiax velodrome alone, several minutes ahead of his chasers, and ran into a groundsman.

He remounted his bike and finished his six laps on the track to become the first Belgian winner of Paris-Roubaix.
