Weather at the finish city of Cantagrillo at 1:00 PM, local time: 21C (69F), fair, with the wind from east at 3 km/hr (2 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Josef Cerny's Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team.

Josef Cerny captured his second win in the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl ranks – after last year’s ITT title at the Nationals – and sealed a great week for the team at the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali, which concluded Saturday with another hilly stage, this time between Casalguidi and Cantagrillo.

The victory, our squad’s second in Italy after the one scored by Mauro Schmid on the opening day, came after an exceptionally strong ride of the Wolfpack duo, who produced a vintage display of dominance on the hilly roads of Pistoia to land the team’s 16th success of the year.

Two of the ten riders to book a place in the breakaway, Josef Cerny and Rémi Cavagna helped the front group open up an unassailable lead of more than nine minutes, before ramping up the place inside the last 50 kilometers to go, when they provoked a decisive split. Joined by only one other rider, they collaborated to ensure a hefty gap over the chasers, and patiently waited for the right moment to make the winning move.

This came 20 kilometers from the finish, when Cerny skipped away and made full use of his time trial skills to forge out a one-minute gap. Behind, the French Champion kept an eye on Omer Goldstein (Israel-Start Up Nation) before breaking away from him three kilometers from the finish. He linked up with his teammate, who in the meantime slowed down to wait for him, and the duo crossed the line arm-in-arm – a moment reminiscent of another memorable 1-2 involving Cerny, at last year’s Vuelta al Pais Vasco.

“It's always special when you win like this. It was a copy-paste of last year’s Pais Vasco, where I arrived at the finish together with Mikkel, who took the win, after another day in the breakaway. It has been a hard week of racing here, but we felt good and so we decided to go in the early move. It was a numerous one, but then we attacked and continued in just three. On the penultimate lap I accelerated, and with the other guy not following, I immediately built a nice gap.”

“In the closing kilometers, Rémi dropped him and joined me, which was special and beautiful. You always like sharing the joy with a teammate. It’s my first victory of the season and I would love to add some more. We leave the race with two stage wins and a lot of confidence, having shown the Wolfpack spirit on all the stages”, concluded Josef.

Les Woodland's book Tour of Flanders: The Inside Story - The rocky roads of the Ronde van Vlaanderen is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Montecatini at 12:40 PM, local time: 21C (70F), sunny, with the wind from the southwest at 8 km/hr (5 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from GC leader Edward Dunbar's INEOS Grenadiers team.

Eddie Dunbar and Ben Tulett retained a Grenadiers 1-2 at Settimana Coppi e Bartali, as Ethan Hayter sprinted to second on the penultimate stage.

Once again the team helped control the race, working hard across a testing parcours. Hayter was narrowly denied by Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin Fenix) at the line, but with Dunbar and Tulett finishing safely in the group, their GC positions remained.

With one stage to go, Dunbar holds a nine-second lead over his teammate, with Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) 24 seconds back.

Over in Belgium, the team rode hard at E3 Harelbeke with a pair of top-10 finishes on the day. Jhonatan Narvaez and Dylan van Baarle finished seventh in ninth respectively, after making their way into the lead group.

The pair were part of the sprint for third, with no one able to shut down the two-up attack from Jumbo-Visma teammates Wout Van Aert and Christophe Laporte.

Earlier the Grenadiers had set to work in a bid to pull back a dangerous move that went clear on the Taaienberg. Ben Turner was instrumental in helping to bring the race back together, allowing Narvaez to jump across the gap on the Eikenberg. The Classics campaign continues on Sunday at Gent-Wevelgem.l

The final part of the three-race day came in Catalunya. A day for the sprinters was all about staying out of trouble, with Richard Carapaz and Carlos Rodriguez retaining their GC positions ahead of a decisive final weekend.

Complete results:

123 riders signed up, 122 started & there were 115 classified finishers. There were 6 DNFs and one disqualification.

Weather at the start/finish city of San Marino at 12:25 PM, local time: 16C (61F), sunny, with the wond form the northeast at 8 km/hr (5 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Ben Tulett's Team INEOS Grenadiers:

Ben Tulett continued a strong week for the team at Coppi e Bartali by taking an impressive victory on the queen stage.

The young Brit attacked late on to claim his first professional success, leading home teammate Eddie Dunbar to make it a resounding Grenadiers 1-2 in San Marino.

The pair had been part of a select group that had gone clear at the end of a tough day of climbing, on another impressive day of teamwork.

Dunbar extended his overall lead with second place, and is now nine seconds ahead of Tulett, and 24 ahead of third-placed Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates).

Over at Volta a Catalunya, another day of climbing saw the Grenadiers come to the fore. Richard Carapaz launched a late attack amongst the GC contenders on the climb to Boi Taull. The Ecuadorian eventually finished seventh, with teammate Carlos Rodriguez finishing just behind in ninth.

Jonathan Castroviejo got through a lot of work late on in a bid to keep the tempo high, and pull back a pair of attackers. In the end it was Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) who picked up the win,  while Nairo Quintana (Arkea Samsic) moved into the overall lead.

Carapaz now sits ninth overall, 26 seconds back, with Rodriguez 13th on GC, at 59 seconds.

Wednesday, March 23: Stage 2, Riccione - Longiano, 165.9 km

Ethan Hayter wins stage two. Sirotti photo

Plato's dialogue Phaedo is available as an audiobook here. For the Kindle eBook version, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Longiano at 1:00 PM, local time: 16C (60F), fair, with the wind from the northwest at 16 km/hr (10 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Ethan Hayter's INEOS Grenadiers team.

Ethan Hayter produced a superb sprint to take victory at Coppi e Bartali on a fantastic day for the Grenadiers.

The Brit led home a 1-3 for the team on stage two, with Ben Tulett scoring third place amid a select group of riders into Longiano. Also present in the group was Eddie Dunbar, with the Irishman moving into the overall race lead.

The result came off the back of a strong team performance, with the Grenadiers taking up the pace-setting duties, with a big late turn from Geraint Thomas helping to thin out the pack, as the team also shut down a number of counter-attacks.

Ethan Hayter:
"It’s really nice to get that first win of the year. I started my training quite late and had COVID in January to mix in with that, so I’ve been struggling a little bit in the longer races. Time trials are short efforts so I think you can get away with it a little bit but it meant I knew the form was there.

"Today’s stage was hard - really hard, all day. Alpecin rode hard and then Van der Poel attacked with 100km to go. Everyone panicked and started jumping but we always had guys there in the moves and we were on the front foot.

"We wanted to race aggressively today but as soon as the leader Schmid was dropped we had Eddie in the virtual lead. We decided then it was better just to control the race and G was so, so strong. I had to tell him to slow down at one point!

"Three of us attacked, me, Ben and Eddie, and formed a group of eight over the final climb just before the finish, so we had a little head start. UAE had to work to pull us back and we dropped Van der Poel, so it was perfect.

"There’s still three really hard days to go but we’re first, second and fourth on GC and there’s not many teams with numbers at the front. We have the team to control the race but if we didn’t, the three of us can take turns following moves. It’s perfect. Eddie and Ben are going really well too - well, the whole team here is to be honest. We’re hoping we can do the business."

Oli Cookson:
“A tough day on paper and it was even tougher in the race itself. We were ready for the final circuits that started after 55km and we knew how technical and difficult the roads would be. We used our strength in numbers to our advantage, covering moves on the climbs, and followed the big names when they were trying to push and open the race. Once the existing GC leader Schmid from Quick-Step was dropped, we took control of the race with Geraint to calm things down. G did an incredible ride, riding for over 50km on the front.

"We managed the other attacks with Eddie and Ben going on the final laps. In the end we knew the final climb suited Ethan with the sprint. The guys managed the whole situation well, covering late moves from UAE, and chapeau to all of them. They rode the race from the front and we were on the front foot all day which is key in this type of stage. We’re in a good position moving forwards but it’s going to be hard work in the coming days. We’ve got a strong team and we’re ready to give it everything.”

Tuesday, March 22: Stage 1, Riccione - Riccione, 164.6 km.

Les Woodland's book Cycling Heroes: The Golden Years is available as an audiobook here. For the print and Kindle eBook versions, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Riccione at 1:15 PM, local time: 12C (54F), fair, with the wind from the north at 14 km/hr (9 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Mauro Schmid's Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team.

Stage 1 of Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali made clear one thing: Mauro Schmid loves Italy. After breaking the ice in the pro ranks at last season’s Il Giro with a memorable victory in Montalcino following a whole day in the break that took him over the famous white roads of Tuscany, the Swiss notched up his second win on Italian soil and for the first time in his career pulled on the leader’s jersey in a stage race.

Held around Riccione over a hilly 164.2 course peppered by several short and sharp hills, the opening day of the event was animated by a four-man breakaway that was pegged back with 40 kilometers to go. The big attacks of the stage came on the Montefiore Conca, the last classified climb, where Eddie Dunbar (Ineos Grenadiers) rode clear of the bunch on the steepest part. Over the top, Mauro Schmid launched a huge counterattack, closing the gap and joining the Irishman in a move that by the time the downhill was over had a 50-second advantage over the small peloton.

The duo worked well together and continued to tap out a strong rhythm in the closing kilometers, and despite the concerted efforts of the chasing group which featured many of the race’s GC favourites, they held them off and fought for victory on the finishing straight in Riccione. Mauro produced a fast turn of legs that gave absolutely no chance to his opponent, powering like a locomotive to his first victory for Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl and the team’s 14th success of the season.

“The team was really strong and did a perfect job, keeping the pace quite high on the climbs in the final 50 kilometers, so we were always in a good position. We all knew it would come down to the steep climb inside the last 30 kilometers, I was sure that you need to be up there in the front. Dunbar went on the ascent, at which point I was suffering a bit, but I remained in the group and as soon as we crested the top, I attacked, having previously noticed everybody was looking at each other. I just went as hard as I could and nobody followed, and I soon closed the gap.”

“Then we rode the last 20 kilometers together and we kept the pace high, taking out our advantage to almost one minute. I had confidence in my sprint, because I know that it’s good at the end of the day, and just waited as long as possible before kicking out. Today everything went perfect and we couldn’t have had a better start to the week”, said Mauro after the podium ceremony, where he took the leader’s, points and youth jerseys.

“I think Italy is a good place for me. I like the roads and the terrain suits me quite well, and bringing it home today makes me very happy. Taking my first win with the Wolfpack it’s fantastic, I already felt good in Oman where I finished top 10 overall last month, but this success takes some weight off my shoulders and makes me really confident for the upcoming stages here at Coppi e Bartali”, concluded the first Swiss rider in 12 years (and just the second in history) to get a win at the Italian race.
