The race:
In 2017 The Giro del Trentino was renamed, becoming the "Tour of the Alps".
Started in 1962 and run irregularly until the 1980s, The Tour of the Alps/Giro del Trentino is an important pre-Giro d'Italia tuneup held in the hilly Trentino region, which is close to Austria. The Dolomite mountains in the Trentino region northwest of Venice give the racers a good chance to get in some hard racing and to test their form against other Giro contenders.
The two 1960's editions were single day races. In 1979 it became a stage race.
Much like the 1912 Giro d'Italia, the 1986 edition was a team race with no individual winner. Neither race has ever repeated the team formula.
Currently (2022) the Tour of the Alps is held in mid to late April with the Giro d'Italia coming in early May.
