The race:

The Volta ao Algarve, held in early-mid February, is one of the European calendar's first stage races. The Algarve region is in the far south of Portugal.

The race existed for years before the records shown below as a pro, amateur and as an open event.

The Volta ao Algarve was first run in 1936 and won by Joaquim Fernandes.

It was an amateur race from 1977 to 1983 and the 1987 race was held as an open event.

In 2005 is was re-classed at a 2.1 level race.

In 2017 it was upgraded to 2.HC and in 2020 it was made part of the ProSeries.
