The race:

The oddly named E3 (E3 is a Belgian highway) is an important Belgian race that kicks off a tough week of Flemish racing on a Friday or Saturday in late March that ends with the Tour of Flanders the following weekend.

It's an important race, not only as a vital tune-up for the Tour of Flanders (the race has some of the same ascents as the Tour of Flanders) but in its own right as a prestigious race that has had greats from Rik Van Looy, Jan Raas, Mario Cipollini to Tom Boonen win it.

The race was originally called Harelbeke-Anvers-Harelbeke. It kept that appellation through the first 12 editions and in 1970 became the E3.

In 2019 it became the E3 BinckBank Classic.

Late in 2019 Saxo Bank acquired BinckBank and the race was renamed the E3 Saxo Bank Classic.
