The race:
Clasica San Sebastián became a Pro Tour race in 2005 (now a UCI WorldTour race). Formerly round 7 of the World Cup Series and Spain's only World Cup race.
The winning move in this hilly race is usually made on the Alto de Jaizkebel climb, about 36 kilometers from the finish. Good climbers generally win this race. It is selective and a glance at the winners' list shows that some of the modern era's finest riders have won the race.
The San Sebastián Classic and the Vattenfall Cyclassics are generally held soon after the Tour de France is completed. In 2009 the San Sebastian race was run on August 1.
The race is held in Basque country, Donostia being the Basque name for San Sebastián.
