Ivan Basso was among the best of the GC contenders at 8th.

After a forgettable Tour de France big Tom Boonen seems to have found his form, finishing 9 seconds behind Cancellara.

Fabian Cancellara set the course on fire.

Cadel Evans also was right there with the other GC riders, a second slower than Basso and Valverde.

Third place for Tyler Farrar.

Alejandro Valverde turned in the same time as Ivan Basso, 18 seconds slower than Cancellara.

Vinokourov looks like he's about to rip the bars out of the stem. He says he's not in good shape yet. Same time as Valverde and Basso makes me think he's is terrific condition. The big mountains in the third week will tell the story, however, not a 5 km prologue.

Fabian Cancellara is the 2009 Vuelta's first Golden Jersey.
