Tour de France: the Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Tour de France: The Inside story - Making the World's Greatest Bicycle Race is available as an audiobook here.

1968 Tour Quick Facts:

4,684.8 km ridden at an average speed of 34.894 km/hr.

There were 110 starters and 63 classified finishers.

This was the last year the Tour was run on a national team format.

By the final stage, an individual time trial, the top 7 riders were within 2 minutes of each other.

Jan Janssen won the stage and the Tour on that final day and became the winner without ever having won the Yellow Jersey during the race.

This was the last edition of the Tour de France in which the competitors raced on national teams. From 1969 on, riders competed on trade teams.

You can read our 2011 interview with Jan Janssen here.
