Plato's Phaedo

Plato's dialogue Phaedo is available as an audiobook here.

Quick 1963 Tour Facts:

4,137 km raced an an average speed of 37.09 km/hr. 130 starters and 76 classified finishers.

This was Jacques Anquetil's fourth Tour victory and it was a demonstration of how completely Anquetil could master his competition when he was at the top of his game.

The Tour organization wanted to reduce Anquetil's chances of dominating the Tour and so reduced the time trialing from 111 kilometers in 1962 to 79.

Also, to help the purer climbers, stage finishes were moved closer to the crests of the final climbs.

Didn't work.

Previously Anquetil's climbing skills had been thought marginal. It was said he couldn't be dropped and could drop no one.

In this Tour Anquetil gave a master class in climbing as well as time trialing.

Short black and white video of the 1963 Tour de France

Photos from the 1963 Tour de France:

Stage 10: I can't identify the trailing rider. It might be José Perez-Frances or Estaban Martin, both riders on the Ferrys team. Then, from the left: Bahamontes, Poulidor and Anquetil on their left, on the edge of the road.

Stage 13: Anquetil wins the field sprint in Aurillac. Van Looy won the stage with a 37-second gap on the field. I think that's Bahamontes' head just peeking above Anquetil's shoulder.
