Tour de France: the Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Tour de France: The Inside Story - Making the World's Greatest Bicycle Race is available as an audiobook here.

1938 Tour Quick Facts:

4,694 km raced at an average speed of 31.565 km/hr.

95 starters aligned on national teams with 55 classified finishers.

The touriste-routier independent classification is ended. From 1938 onward, only members of teams will ride the Tour.

While winner Bartali had some bad luck in the Pyrenees, he dominated in the Alps.

Bartali's stage fourteen ride is the stuff of history.

Time bonuses: There were reduced in 1938 to 1 minute for the stage winner.

Also 1 minute to the winner of the rated climbs plus the equivalent of his lead at the top of the mountain, up to a maximum of 1.15 minutes.
