Weather in Düsseldorf at 4:40 PM, local time: 17C (63F), rain showers with the wind from the west at 11 km/hr (7mph).

The race: Here's the organizer's stage summary.

Geraint Thomas powered to victory in the second half of the inaugural time trial to claim his first yellow jersey at the Tour de France at the age of 32, ten years after his debut in London. Four Team Sky riders made the top 8 including Chris Froome who was the fastest of the GC favorite on the 14-km long course in Düsseldorf. Alejandro Valverde abandoned after crashing on the wet road.

First man on the road and youngest rider of the 104th Tour de France, Elie Gesbert (Fortuneo-Oscaro) who celebrated his 22nd birthday had the best time for less than two minutes before Italian sprinter Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrein-Merida) took the first position. Third man in the lead was Andrei Grivko (Astana) at the average speed of 51.376km/h. But Nikias Arndt (Sunweb) pleased the German fans as he rode one second faster than him in 16.20. Matteo Trentin (Quick-Step Floors) was next in first position with the time of 16.14. The joy of the Italian was short lived as former world champion Vassil Kiryienka (Sky) took three seconds less to cover the 14km under the rain at 51.905km/h.

Team Sky continued to perform as Geraint Thomas bettered the time of his team-mate in 16.04 at the average speed of 52.282km/h. The road remained slippery and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) had a bad crash in a curve. He was forced to pull out of the Tour de France at the difference of other riders who went down like Nicolas Roche (BMC), Rick Zabel (Katusha-Alpecin), Dylan Groenewegen and George Bennett (LottoNL-Jumbo).

Informed of Roche's accident, Richie Porte (BMC) didn't take any risks. He rode 35 seconds slower than arch-rival Chris Froome (Sky), while Nairo Quintana (Movistar), Romain Bardet (AG2R-La Mondiale) and Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo) finished 36, 39 and 42 seconds down on the defending champion respectively. The whole Team Sky could celebrate as Thomas remained in the lead and took his first yellow jersey ever. Second of stage 1 at five seconds, Stefan Küng (BMC) became the best young rider on his Tour de France debut like his Swiss compatriots Alex Zülle (1992) and Fabian Cancellara (2004) previously.

Geraint Thomas

Geraint Thomas is the first yellow jersey of the 2017 Tour de France

Organizer's stage 1 preview: Several times, Germany's Tony Martin has been tipped as a favourite for the first yellow jersey of the Tour de France. He came second in the two opening time trials contested in The Netherlands, behind Fabian Cancellara in Rotterdam in 2010 and Rohan Dennis in Utrecht in 2015. In the meantime, he slipped on the course of Liège in 2012 because of a piece of glass in his back tyre. However, he managed to take the yellow jersey two years ago throughout stage 4 on the cobblestones of northern France.

The pressure is off in terms of chasing the precious outfit but the pressure is on again as he has a unique occasion to perform on home soil. The 14-km long time trial in Düsseldorf definitely suits the world champion but he's yet to win a race against the clock this year. He came second on three occasions, beaten by Jonathan Castroviejo (Movistar) at the Volta ao Algarve, Matthias Brändle (Trek-Segafredo) at the Tour of Belgium and Richie Porte (BMC) at the Critérium du Dauphiné. Wearing the European champion blue and white jersey, Castroviejo will be a rider to watch again while Primoz Roglic and Jos van Emden (LottoNL-Jumbo), Stefan Küng (BMC), Maciej Bodnar (Bora-Hansgrohe), Taylor Phinney (Cannondale-Drapac) and Luke Durbridge (Orica-Scott) are other specialists likely to strike. GC contenders Chris Froome (Sky) and Porte are also able to clock one of the best times.
