Story of the Tour de France

2009 Tour de France
July 4 - July 26, 2009

Pictures from Fotoreporter Sirotti for Stage 20, Saturday, July 25: Montélimar - Mont Ventoux, 167 km

Back to 2009 Tour Page.

It was a windy and hot day on Mt. Ventoux.
The yellow jersey group makes it way up the hill.
Saxo, in particular the Schlecks, softened the legs of the peloton and it was down to a select group. Here Andy Schleck leads Contador with Armstrong right there followed by Frank Schleck.
Andy tried to take his brother Frank off the front but Armstrong and Contador were having none of it.
Wiggins put in a gutsy ride, yo-yoing off the back of the Contador group. The final acceleration was too much. He finished 10th, about a half-minute behind Contador.
All that was left of a large early break, Juan Garate (here winning today's stage) and Tony Martin suffered like dogs holding off the fast-moving Yellow Jersey group.
Andy Schleck beat Contador across the line for third, but with no time bonuses in play this year, it gained him nothing. Armstrong is close behind Contador with Frank Schleck behind him.
Alberto Contador has just won the 2009 Tour de France.
Armstrong matched and then beat Frank Schleck (just behind Armstrong's shoulder), preserving his third place.
