Story of the Tour de France

2009 Tour de France
July 4 - July 26, 2009

Pictures from Fotoreporter Sirotti for Stage 17, Wednesday, July 22: Bourg Saint Maurice - Le Grand Bornand, 169.5 km

Back to 2009 Tour Page.

Thor Hushovd took off early in the day and swept up the intermediate sprint points, dimming any chance that Cavendish could retake the green jersey.
Contador riding towards the finish with the Schleck brothers. Andy (middle) tried to drop Contador and Contador repaid the favor. Neither succeeded so, advantage Contador, he keeps the lead.
The day wore Bradley Wiggins down a bit. He finished behind Armstrong and Nibali and dropped to sixth place. I'll bet he's awesome next year.
Earlier in the stage, Armstrong (black sox) with Contador right behind him.
Carlos Sastre attacked a couple of times on the Col de Romme, but ultimately lost almost 8 minutes today. After his odd press conference where he cited an anti-Sastre conspiracy, I don't know who he's going to blame today's loss on.
Frank Schleck gets the stage and third in GC, Contador gets the lead and Andy Schleck moves up to second in GC.
Armstrong and Nibali followed in 2min 18sec later.
