The Race: Damiano Cunego, who had crashed in the first stage, did not start stage six.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

A seven-man break was allowed some room but with 24 kilometers to go, they had all been mopped up by the Tinkoff-Saxo-led peloton. Tinkoff-Saxo had put so much pressure on the pack that it looked like there were only about ten riders in the lead group as the final ascent began.

Rafal Majka blasted away on the steepest part of the final Bukovina ascent but the Movistar duo of Benat Intxaust and Jon Izaguirre felt like conceding nothing and went after the Polish rider. They came within 10 seconds at the finish.

Race leader Petr Vakoc had gone very deep yesterday to save his lead, but today was just too hard and too fast. Vakoc was shelled on the penultimate climb, scrambled back on on the descent and was dropped for good on the final climb, coming in 15th, 48 seconds behind Majka.

Majka won the stage and finally took the overall lead with the Spaniards 18 and 20 seconds behind. That's close enough to make tomorrow's 25 km individual time trial very interesting. It's still anybody's race.

Stage 6 Live Updates:

24 km to go: Damiano Cunego did not start today's stage.

A break of three is just about to be reeled in. Two more climbs to go.

20 km to go: Tinkoff-Saxo is leading a reduced field on a descent. Looks like maybe 25 riders left in the front group. Rafal Majka has lots of help in this front group.

16 km to go: On the penultimate climb to Bukovina. All the GC contenders are there. Tinkoff-Saxo is still hammering at the front.

14 km to go: Rory Sutherland has finished his work at the front and pulled off. It's really steep.

13 km to go: Race leader Petr Vakoc is shelled. Majka has dropped the hammer. A Katusha rider (Caruso?) is trying to get up to him.

12 km to go: Vakoc hasn't given up. He's got at least one teammate and he's keeping the leaders in sight.

Bam! Robert Gesink is first over the climb. No, it's Lars Petter Nordhaug.

11 km to go: Gesink is pushing on. Warren Barguil is staying up front, but seems to be reluctant to help. Rafal Majka is trying to get the others to work.

5 km to go: Warren Barguil has gap, but he's just getting reeled in.

3 km to go: Tinkoff-Saxo is leading a slightly increased lead group as they start the final climbs. Vakoc is shelled again.

2 km to go: Majka always looks like he's on his last legs, but he's right up near the front.

Bam! Majka goes. Barguil tries to mark him, but can't. Rafal Majka is flying away.

1.5 km to go: The climb eases a bit here, but Majka looks like he is well and truly gone. Izaguirre and Intxausti (both Movistar) are chasing.

1 km to go: No time gap, but it looks like Rafal Majka has the stage won.

The finish: Majka wins the stage but the Spaniards are closing in. The gap isn't very big. looks like the Spaniards came in about nine seconds after Majka. With the 10-second time bonus for winning the stage Majka is the race leader. But, does he have enough time to withstand tomorrow's time trial?
