The Race: Another wet, rainy day of racing in Poland. A good-sized break was allowed to roll away, but since this was the first day day in the hills, a stage for the GC men to gain time, the day was going to be decided by the riders who can climb.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

The last survivor of the day's break was Orica's Christian Meier and he was reeled in by the Tinkoff-Saxo-led pack with 11 km to go. Working for Tinkoff-Saxo GC man Rafal Majka, Rory Sutherland set a fierce pace up the final climb to Strbskie Pleso, but none of the GC men were put in trouble. Ryder Hesjedal tried at least twice to get away, but it was a compact group that dashed for the line.

Rafal Majka started from several riders back, but came around everyone to win the stage and the 10-second stage winner's time bonus. At first it was thought Majka had also taken over the race lead.

But no, Peter Vakoc had gone very deep and preserved his GC lead by a single second.

Stage 5 Live Updates:

32 km to go: There is a break 56 seconds up the road. Don't have names yet. Roads are wet, course is hilly.

30 km to go: Christian Meier (Orica-GreenEdge) is alone, off the front. Garmin-Sharp is leading the peloton.

29 km to go: Ryder Hesjedal has attacked the peloton and is going like a motorcycle. I know Rory Sutherland is between Meier and the pack and two other riders. They are on the penultimate climb.

The Sutherland trio has been caught and Meier's gap is shrinking. Don't see Hesjedal off the front any more.

26 km to go: Meier was first over the crest and is descending alone. Sergio Henao led the pack over. They are going 77 km down a wet mountain road.

20 km to go: Meier is descending crazy fast. He's 16 seconds ahead of the pack.

16 km to go: Tinkoff-Saxo, working for Rafal Majka is leading the chase. The peloton is lined out as they approach the final climb. Meier still has 12 seconds. Rafal Majka has taken off his arm warmers and hands them off to a teammate. Stuff is going to happen.

13 km to go: The road has started to tilt upward for the final climb to Strbskie Pleso. Meier is all over his bike, thrashing it, keeping it going and still staying about 12 seconds ahead of the peloton.

11 km to go: Meier has been caught. BMC has joined Tinkoff-Saxo in leading the pack. Majka is near the front.

7 km to go: Rory Sutherland is tapping out a hard pace for Tinkoff-Saxo at the front of affairs. Things are still together.

5 km to go: Sutherland pulls off. Majka still has two teammates in front of him.

4 km to go: Siutsiu (Sky) is off the front. He isn't drawing a counter. Siutsiu is caught by the pack led by Robert Gesink (Belkin).

3 km to go: Ilnur Zakarin (RusVelo) dangled a bit off the front, but Fabio Aru led the field back up to him.

2 km to go: Hesjedal tries again, but doesn't get a gap. Pieter Weening is on his wheel.

Final Kilometer: Hesjedal pounds away. Now goes Pieter Weening. Weening has a gap!

The finish: Weening is caught. And now Amador goes. And then, from several riders back Rafal Majka goes by everyone and wns the stage. Petr Vakoc is digging deep and may have kept his lead.

Majka takes over the lead. Vakoc is at the same time, in second place. Now they are showing Vakoc in the lead. I'll shut up until there are official results.

Official results are in. Vakoc remains the leader by a single second.
