The Race: It started out a nice day for a bicycle race. But that changed with plunging temperatures, hail and rain. The roads became incredibly slippery with crash after crash taking down riders. Early on five riders escaped, but going around what looked like an easy curve with 23 kilometers remaining, they all fell.

First one up was Maciej Paterski (CCC Polsat). He took off, chased by Jimmy Engoulvent (Europcar) and Matthias Krizek (Cannondale). The duo caught Paterski with 12 kilometers to go and the trio worked together smoothly to do their best to stay away from the Tinkoff-Saxo led pack. It almost worked, but everyone was caught with a kilometer left to race. That set things up for a dangerous sprint that was indeed marred by an awful crash when Luka Mezgec ran into a barrier.

Ag2r sprinter Yauheni Hutarovich out-muscled the others to win the sprint.

Note: The GC was later recalculated and the GC leader after stage one was Yauheni Hutarovich, ahead of Roman Maikin by four seconds. Originally credited with the GC lead, Matthias Krizek was moved to fifth place, down 8 seconds. The correct GC is now posted.

Live Updates:

30 km to go: It's a dreadful day. There has been hail and very cold rain. Lots of crashes. A break of five has about two and a half minutes.

23 km to go: The riders are on the final circuit. The break is 1min 27sec ahead of the field. The field is strung out. It looks like the peloton, led by Tinkoff-Saxo, wants to catch the break.

Aww, all the riders in the break slipped going around a corner carefully.

it looks like Maciej Paterski (CCC Polsat) is in the lead and being first back on his bike and is pressing on. Jimmy Engoulvent and Matthias Krizek are chasing Paterski.

15 km to go: Maciej Paterski is looking good, but Englevent and Krizek are closing in on him.

14 km to go: Paterski is about 100 meters in front of the chasing pair. No time gap back to the peloton.

12 km to go: It's now three riders in the lead, Paterski has been caught: Matthias Krizek, Jimmy Engoulvent and Maciej Paterski. They are 40 seconds ahead of the peloton as everyone is trying to just stay upright on the slick roads.

10 km to go: Tinkoff-Saxo still leads the pack. The lead trio has 38 seconds.

7 km to go: The lead trio is working together with a vengeance. They have 23 seconds. The roads look like they are drying out a bit. Maybe the finish won't be a scene of meyhem.

3 km to go: Paterski is off alone, 12 seconds clear. Giant-Shimano is moving up in the peloton.

2 km to go: Paterski has 14 seconds. The peloton is closing in on him.

1 km to go: Paterski has been caught.

The finish: Big crash on the side of the road as a couple of riders slammed into the barriers. Yauheni Hutarovich (Ag2r) won the sprint. I'll post full results as soon as they are available.
