Weather at the start/finish city of Palma at 2:00 PM, local time: 11C (52F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the northeast at 24 km/hr (15 mph). There is a 70% chance of rain, dropping to 4% at 4:00 PM.

The race: Here's the report from winner Ethan Vernon's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Ethan Vernon delivered the second Wolfpack victory of the season with a perfectly-timed sprint on the last day of the Challenge Mallorca, a success that was sealed through an impressive collective performance on the streets of the Balearic Islands’ largest city.

Soudal Quick-Step produced a flawless ride the entire day, posting Tim “El Tractor” Declercq at the front of the peloton to control the breakaway’s gap and make sure it wouldn’t become a threat. Tim’s excellent work paid dividends when the five escapees were brought back on the local laps in Palma, where our squad continued to remain in the driving seat, aware that positioning would be key in the technical finale, which included a make-or-break U-turn with 250 meters to go.

French Champion Florian Sénéchal and Davide Ballerini were the last men in the train, keeping the speed high under the flamme rouge, before Ethan unleashed an incredible rush towards the line 150 meters from the line, outpowering all his opponents on the way to becoming the first Brit since 2017 to capture a victory at the Challenge Mallorca.

How much this win – the 897th in the history of Soudal Quick-Step – meant for the 22-year-old from Bedford was clear on his face: “It’s nice to come away with a victory here after the team was so close in the other four races. The weather was finally good, which was nice for a change, and the boys did a great job the entire day. Tim worked the whole race, while the rest of the guys brought me where I needed to be when it came to crunch time, and I’m grateful for that. After Wednesday, when I made it over all those climbs, I knew I had the form, and this gave me confidence. I’m delighted with this victory, the entire squad deserved it.”

Weather at the start/finish city of Lloseta at 2:00 PM, local time: 7F (45F), raining, with the wind from the northeast at 19 km/hr (12 mph). The rain is forecast to continue all afternoon.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Lennert Van Eetvelt's Team Lotto Dstny.

A day after finishing third at the Trofeo Andratx, Lennert Van Eetvelt took another podium place at the Challenge Mallorca. This time, the 21-year-old Belgian finished second at the Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana after excellent teamwork by Lotto Dstny.

Due to snowfall, the originally planned race was shortened to 120 kilometres but that didn’t bother Van Eetvelt, who again impressed in one of his first racing days as a pro. The penultimate test at the Challenge Mallorca was decided in the last of two climbs of the Coll de Femenies. It was Harry Sweeny who upped the pace and only a handful riders could follow, one of which being his teammate Lennert Van Eetvelt. In a tactical and ice-cold final, Van Eetvelt again showed himself as one of the strongest guys of the bunch. The Lotto Dstny rider came in second after Kobe Goossens, who took his second consecutive victory on Mallorca after a short solo.

The young climber Van Eetvelt spoke with mixed feelings about his second place: “To finish second today after a third place yesterday is on the one hand fantastic. It is great to be able to show this so early in my career. But of course it’s also a shame that I just missed out on the victory again. At the bottom of the last time Coll de Femenies, I didn’t feel great anymore to be honest. I was really cold but my teammates really believed in me and gave me the confidence. That made the difference and thanks to the support of the team I went for it. Pascal Eenkhoorn brought me to the front and Harry Sweeny ensured a strong pace on the climb. This caused splits in the bunch, which made it a little easier to race the final but at the end it was a strong Goossens who still got away. But I am really grateful for the support of my teammates and happy that I could reward them with another podium spot.”

Weather at the city of Pollença, near the finish at 1:40 PM, local time: 8C (46F), cloudy, with the wind from the northeast at 16 km/hr (10 mph). There is a 16% - 22% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the race report from Team Bora-hansgrohe.

Extreme weather conditions and a very difficult course – today's Trofeo Andratx - Mirador D'es Colomer demanded everything from the peloton. Over a length of 161 kilometres, the third stage of Challenge Mallorca awaited the riders with the 882 metres high Puig Major – the longest climb on tGrosseshe island. Early on, the race was dominated by a breakaway group, including BORA - hansgrohe rider Cian Uijtdebroeks.

About 100 kilometres before the finish, Uijtdebroeks and the Belgian Kobe Goossens (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) were able to break away from their companions and rode together over the Puig Major, at the top of which even snow began to fall. Unfortunately, Uijtdebroeks couldn’t follow his companion in the following cold and technically very difficult descent. Despite a great performance on the last kilometres, he was caught up by the chasers less than one kilometre before the finish. In the end, Goossens won ahead of the Spaniard Pelayo Sanchez (Burgos-BH) and the Belgian Lennert Van Eetvelt (Lotto Dstny). The best BORA - hansgrohe rider was German Emanuel Buchmann in ninth place, 53 seconds behind the winner.

"It was a really hard day. I tried to be in the front from the beginning, and in Vall de Mossa I attacked. A few kilometres later, five other rides joined, and we formed the group of the day. However, in the descent from Coll de Sóller, Kobe Goossens attacked out of the front group and I was the only rider who was able to follow him. From then on, the race was fully on and I had to give everything I had. Unfortunately, I got a bit tired in the end and couldn’t close the gap to Goossens anymore. I still went with full force towards the finish, but one kilometre before the line, the chasing group caught me." – Cian Uijtdebroeks

"With temperatures of four degrees and pouring rain, today was a particularly tough race. So first, respect to everyone who competed here. Of course, we would have wished for a better result, especially because the riders all performed well. Cian's performance deserves special mention – he definitely would have deserved a top result. Even if the outcome of the race was, in the end, not the best, we can certainly be confident for the next days. The team is really motivated." – Torsten Schmidt, Sporting Director

Weather at the finish city of Alcúdia at 1:30 PM, local time: 11C (51F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the northeast at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is currently an 11% chance of rain, growing to 35% at 4:00 PM.

The race: Here's the report from winner Marijn van den Berg's Team EF Education-EasyPost.

Marijn van den Berg won the Trofeo ses Salines-Port d’Alcudia today in Mallorca.

The EF Education-EasyPost rider attacked into the final corner and left his rivals gasping, as he held his speed across the line and celebrated his first ever professional win. Afterwards, Marijn thanked his teammates for the work they did to set him up for the wet and tricky finale.

“I stayed with the first group and then we had a perfect lead out with Neilson and Owain and Julius,” Marijn said. “They did a great job. I just had to finish it so it was good. It’s the first win of my career with the pros. Hopefully there are more to come.”

This victory proved the second-year pro’s resilience, daring, and skill.

It was another cold wet day in Mallorca. The second of the Spanish island’s early-season races, the Trofeo Port d’Alcúdia, looped around the rugged northeast corner of the island, crossing the second-category Coll sa Batalla and then the Coll Femenia, before the swooping return to the beachside town of Port d’Alcúdia and the finish-line. Marijn had to get over the mountains with the front group before he could let loose in the rainy, technical final kilometre. The plan from the start was to hit the last corner first and not look back.

That’s exactly what Marijn did. He worked his way forward through the surging group with the help of his teammates. Hugh Carthy had done a huge turn to bring back the last attacker and keep the bunch together for the sprint. Then, Neilson Powless, Owain Doull, and Julius van den Berg took over and brought Marijn to the front. Marijn launched when he saw the final turn. He knew the line was right around the bend. The others never had a chance.

“I’m not really a bunch sprinter, but this was perfect for me,” he said. “It was a hard race, small group, and then a sprint. I think that’s what my power is. I feel really good. I felt good during the training camp and during training in the last weeks. I had good legs today and to finish it is always nice.”

Next, Marijn heads to the south of France for the GP Cycliste de Marseille La Marseillaise. He will aim to repeat today's feat at the tough and hilly traditional French season opener, but first he'll celebrate his first ever pro victory. Congratulations Marijn!

Race 1 profile

Rui Costa just beats Louis Vervaeke.

Les Woodland's book Cycling Heroes: The Golden Years is available in the print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Palmanova at 1:40 PM, local time: 11C (52F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the northeast at 26 km/hr (16 mph). Through 2:00 PM there is an 85% chance of rain, dropping to 1% at 4:00 PM.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Louis Vervaeke's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Louis Vervaeke came within a wheel from his first pro victory in Trofeo Calvia, the first appointment of the Challenge Mallorca, which signalled the start of the team’s European season. Taking place over a 150km hilly route around Palmanova, the race was an eventful one with Soudal Quick-Step as one of the main protagonists.

With 60 kilometers to go, the Wolfpack made its move, attacking from the peloton with four riders: Julian Alaphilippe, Andrea Bagioli, Casper Pedersen, Ilan Van Wilder and Louis Vervaeke. The quinted were joined by seven other men, making it a strong chasing group, which under the impetus of our squad quickly put two minutes between them and the bunch. Due to a crash – fortunately, without serious consequence – Ilan was forced to abandon, but our team continued to push the pace. Then, when the remaining escapees’ gap dropped below a minute, Louis surged clear on one of the numerous climbs on the course, only Rui Costa (Intermarche-Wanty-Gobert) being able to join him.

Making his first appearance of the season, the Belgian displayed a good form as he joined the two riders in the front before launching another dig, this time with around twenty kilometers to go. This short but strong attack left him alone up the road, but despite the 15-second gap he carried into the last ten kilometers and his all-out effort, the race was far from being over.

Seven kilometers from home, the riders he had dropped on the climb made their way back, and the three of them arrived together on the finishing stretch, where Louis came very close of getting the victory, which was nailed on the line by Rui Costa. The chasing group arrived seconds later, and Casper proved to be the fastest one, taking fourth.

“We knew the descents here are technical, so each time we took on one we tried to be in the best position at the front of the peloton. That’s how we managed to ride away. Sadly, we lost Ilan, but we continued to believe in our chances. I felt good today, so I tried something, but unfortunately, they caught me with just a few kilometers to go. In the sprint I did my best, but I am not the fastest, so the result is logical. The important thing is that we showed how motivated we are, this makes us confident for the next races here in Mallorca”, said Louis, who took the intermediate sprints trophy at the end of the day.
