Bill & Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, 2020: The Tour During Covid-19, Better Late Than Never is available in both Kindle eBook and Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Vence at 1:35 PM, local time: 13C (56F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here’s the report from stage winner Aurélien Paret-Peintre’s Team Ag2r-Citroën:

Aurélien Paret-Peintre: "I had a great day. It's the first victory of the season for the team and it consoles me after the first stage where I was very disappointed with my fourth place. Everyone was exceptional from start to finish. I had great legs and that almost played tricks on me because I was in the first breakaway. In the final, the guys placed me perfectly. It's only happiness.

"Next week, I will approach the Boucles Drôme-Ardèche in the same state of mind to prepare Paris-Nice where I will be ambitious."

The number: 1

Aurélien Paret-Peintre's victory is the first win for the AG2R CITROËN team this season.

This is his second professional victory after the Grand Prix Cycliste La Marseillaise in 2021.

Weather at the finish city of Antibes at 1:45 PM, local time: 13C (55F), cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 5 km/hr (3 mph). There is just a 2% chance of rain.

The race: Here's a machine-translation of the organizer's race summary.

The race for the GC leader’s Mimosa (peach-yellow colored) Jersey gave all its promises this Saturday, during the second stage of the 55th Tour des Alpes-Maritimes et du Var between Mandelieu and Antibes Azur Arena (179km).

Announced as a big outsider for the general classification, the Dane Mattias Skjelmose, second in the Etoile de Bessèges last week, settled a group of around twenty strong riders in front of the Azur Arena.

He pocketed time bonuses and gets closer to the mimosa jersey worn by Kévin Vauquelin (Arkéa-Samsic), third today, who keeps the leader’s jersey with a lead of 20 seconds.

A hell of a great fight is coming for the outcome, this Sunday, with the queen stage between Villefranche-sur-Mer and Vence (132km).

Friday, February 17: Stage 1, St. Raphaël - Ramatuelle, 187 km

Stage 1 profile

Les Woodland's book Tour of Flanders: The Inside Story - The rocky roads of the Ronde van Vlaanderen is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Ramatuelle at 1:40 PM, local time: 13C (55F), sunny, with the wind from the southwest at 14 km/hr (9 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here is a machine-translation of the race organizer's stage one report.

We were expecting a sprint for the finish of the first stage of the 55th Tour des Alpes-Maritimes et du Var, but it was finally a solo rider who won. Kévin Vauquelin, who started just before the red flame, won his first professional victory on this first stage, 187 km between Saint-Raphaël and Ramatuelle, without major difficulty.

Accustomed to places of honor, the one who lives in Cagnes-sur-Mer beat some very good riders, including Neilson Powless (Education First), already winner of the GP La Marseillaise and the Etoile de Bessèges.

The Arkéa-Samsic rider won 5 seconds ahead of Powless and Kevin Geniets (Groupama-FDJ). "I have often worn the best youngster's jersey, this will be the leader's jersey", reacted the young rider, at the microphone of Eurosport.

The peloton finished at 25 seconds and it was Bryan Coquard, whose Cofidis team had been riding all day, who settled the sprint. The stage which crossed the Var, in particular the Massif des Maures, had been marked by a breakaway of five riders (Rapiteau, Kristensen, Bernard, Guégan and the Niçois Le Ny) who started from the start, but resumed about ten kilometers from the arrival.

Complete results:
