Story of the Tour de France

Tour Down Under (Pro Tour), Australia

Winners, podium, distance, average speed

The Tour Down Under stage race is held in South Australia in January.

The first stage begins on the third Tuesday in January. A look at the results below will show that the time differences are small. The Tour Down Under doesn't have a time trial (saving the teams a lot of money in travel costs by eliminating the shipping of the time trial bikes) and the area surrounding Adelaide, where the race is held, has no truly serious climbs. Sprinters tend to do very well in the Tour Down Under.

As of this writing (2009) it is the only Pro Tour race held outside Europe.
