Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Tour of Flanders: The Inside Story - The rocky roads of the Ronde van Vlaanderen is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Treviso at 1:30 PM, local time: 27C (81F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 8 mph (5 mph). There is just a 3% chance of rain.

Info about the route: The route connects the Valsugana and the Venetian Plain through the Scale di Primolano and the Muro di Ca’ del Poggio, the only topographical impediments of the stage, leading to Treviso along straight and usually wide roads. As the stage passes through several urban areas, roundabouts, traffic islands and street furniture will be found along the route. In Treviso, the riders will be met with a circuit of approximately 11 km, to be covered only once.

Final kilometers:
The final circuit is played out on wide and flat roads, with the exception of a slightly narrower sector, from the 4 to the 2 km marker, and of a sharper corner with 3 km to go. Over the last 2 km, the road opens up, with just a final bend 1,200 m before the finish (on tarmac).

The race: GC 4th-place Joao Alemida (UAE Team Emirates) as well as the leader of the young rider classification is Covid-19 positive and is out of the Giro.

Here's the report from second-place Edoardo Affini's Team Jumbo-Visma:

Edoardo Affini has given Team Jumbo-Visma another podium place in the eighteenth stage of the Giro d'Italia. The 25-year-old Italian slipped into a breakaway that lasted until the end of the stage. In the sprint, Affini came just a few centimetres short of winning his first Giro stage.

It was so close... RCS Sport photo

After two challenging mountain stages, a relatively flat stage was on the programme. It was likely to end in a bunch sprint, but a few riders tried to prevent it. Affini rode attentively from the start and tried to get away with three other riders.

The quartet seemed to have embarked on a mission impossible, as the peloton kept the margin within two minutes. With ten kilometres to go, the gap was still one minute, which made the escapees believe they still had a chance to win the stage. The sprinters' teams did everything to close the gap, but it proved to be too big.

As a result, the four riders battled for the day's victory. Affini launched the sprint, but Dries De Bondt beat him just before the finish line. "It's a pity I couldn't win the stage", Affini said.

"I know I'm not very explosive, so I needed a long sprint to have a chance. I followed my instincts and went full speed at about 250 metres from the finish. Unfortunately, Dries was half a wheel faster, so congratulations to him. As a team, we showed again that we can compete for the win. That's perhaps the most important thing."

According to Affini, the collaboration with his fellow escapees went perfectly. "We decided to take it easy and see how the peloton would react. Before the climb, we increased our speed, hoping to gain some extra time. That plan worked out well. Then we went to the finish to win the stage."

Koen Bouwman came through the eighteenth stage well and his blue jersey wasn't jeopardised. "I went to the finish relatively easy", Bouwman said. "I haven’t won the jersey yet. There are still plenty of points to be earned in the coming days, so I will do everything to be in the breakaway tomorrow. Luckily I have very strong teammates who will try to get me in the breakaway."
