Tim Wellens

Tim Wellens wins Giro stage 6

Weather: In the start city of Ponte, Rain, 18°C. Wind: moderate – 22 kmh.

Roccaraso (approx. 17.15 – Finish): Sun, 14°C. Wind: moderate – 18 kmh.

The Route: The first summit finish comes after a short yet full mountain stage. After the first 20 km on flat roads, the route starts to climb along easy to mild gradients for almost 40 kilometres, including a deceptive false-flat drag before the ascent. The route then descends along wide roads, yet worn out at points. From km 75 to km 135, the stage course runs along wide, fast and mostly straight roads, with a number of tunnels in the final stretch. After the Castel di Sangro intermediate sprint, the route takes in the final climb leading to the finish.

The final climb is 17 km long, with an average 4.8% gradient. The first part is quite steep, with a short 12% stretch, followed by a deceptively false-flat drag (across the centre of Roccaraso). Seven kilometres before the finish, the route starts to climb again with variable slopes ranging from 4% to 7%. The final km has a 7% gradient. The home stretch, running entirely uphill, is 120 m long, on 6-m wide asphalt road. Giro d'Italia comes back to Roccaraso after 29 years: in 1987 Moreno Argentin won the stage from Rieti to Roccaraso.

The Race: 193 riders started at 12:48 PM.

Belgian rider Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal) won Stage 6 of the 99th Giro d’Italia, Ponte – Roccaraso (Aremogna), of 157km. Jakob Fuglsang (Astana Pro Team) and Ilnur Zakarin (Team Katusha) finished second and third.

Tom Dumoulin (Team Giant – Alpecin) remains the race leader and keeps the Maglia Rosa.

Seconds after the stage finish, stage winner Tim Wellens said: “I have Pim Ligthart to thank. It was his idea to go away together at that point in the race. Then we bridged the gap to the leaders. I had good feelings today so I could maintain a good pace alone at the front on the final climb. I’m enormously happy with this victory. It’s a little bit of a surprise. I’m happy that no team rode behind us”.

Race leader Tom Dumoulin said: “My attack was not planned but I saw Nibali going so I went too. There was only one opportunity and I took it. I really surprised myself. I was stronger than I expected. I didn’t think I’d be in that shape for climbing. It was not a high mountain but it was still a proper climb today”.

Race leader Tom Dumoulin's Giant-Alpecin team posted this report:

The day got off to a fast start as the riders headed out of Ponte on the 157km route to Roccaraso and it wasn’t long before a break of three slipped up the road. Dumoulin was kept safe throughout the short but mountainous stage, and the Dutchman stayed calm as his teammates controlled the pace in the tricky weather conditions.

With 65km left, two escapees lead the peloton by 4’30” but three riders managed to bridge across to them. We were looking comfortable at the front of the peloton with the riders content to let the five-man break stay clear.

The stage was always likely to be decided on the uphill finish. The challenging climb, which is 17km long and averages a gradient 4.8 percent in gradient, was always going to be the decisive factor and as the peloton closed in on the breakaway Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal) attacked from the breakaway at the foot of the climb. Wellens proved to be the strongest and managed to stay clear as he soloed to victory.

Meanwhile, the main bunch had been reduced to around 20 riders. Tom Dumoulin was well positioned at the front of the peloton with the support of Georg Preidler and Tobias Ludvigsson. With 2km to go, Dumoulin saw an opportunity and attacked. It was a fantastic ride by him and he raced to 4th place. In the general classification, he extended his lead to 26".

Tom Dumoulin said: “I felt actually quite good today much better than I expected. Especially on the last climb, I had some good legs. I coached Tobias and Georg to pace up the first part of the ascent and then the other teams took over. When Nibali attacked and Sky brought him back in the downhill part, I saw an opportunity to attack and I just went for it.

“I could understand that the other guys didn’t want to cooperate with me in the chasing group at the beginning and I would have done the same. In the end, it cost me a little bit of time, but overall it was a good day. It is a bit unexpected to extend my lead, but I am very happy with the performance.”

Coach Marc Reef gave his thoughts after the race: “It was a really tough day. We did a good job with the team at the beginning to control the race. Then Team Movistar did a very fast descent and the whole bunch split. When the race came back together, we set the pace at the front of the peloton once there was the breakaway of five guys. Eventually, as the gap increased quickly other teams joined the chase.

“On the uphill finish, we still had four guys to support Tom and to do the chase. Of course, we were expecting attacks but we stayed calm in the bunch. Georg and Tobias did a great job in setting the tempo. In the last kilometers, Tom saw an opportunity and attacked from the GC group. I didn’t expect it but Tom was very strong and he achieved a great result as we retained the pink jersey.”
