Story of the Tour de France

2009 Giro D'Italia
May 9 - May 31, 2009

Back to 2009 Giro page

May 23, Saturday: Photos from Stage 14, Campo Bisenzio - Bologna (San Luca), 174 km.

On the steep part of the San Luca climb Simon Gerrans (in black) and Christian Froome pulled themselves away from the break. Here Gerrans is starting to apply pressure on Froome.
Further back the best riders had made it to the front of the peloton fro the final climb. Here Armstrong leads Leipheimer with Di Luca on the left in purple and Menchov in pink not far behind.
Di Luca wasn't able to get away from Menchov, they finished with the same time. Leipheimer came off on the steepest part of the San Luca but when the gradient eased he was able to glom back on to the maglia Rosa group.
No one was able to keep Gerrans in sight today.
