Story of the Tour de France

2009 Giro D'Italia
May 9 - May 31, 2009

Back to 2009 Giro page

May 21, Thursday: Photos from Stage 12, Sestri Levante - Riomaggiore (Cinque Terre), 60.6 km. Individual time trial over mixed terrain.

Armstrong certainly delivered a credible ride, losing only two and a half minutes to a very on-form Menchov.
Leipheimer is in the hunt, only 40 seconds behind Menchov in GC.
Michael Rogers, a former World time trial champion (note the rainbow bands on his sleeves) had to have been hoping for better than 14th place today, 2min 46sec slower than Menchov.
Franco Pellizotti thought Basso would eclipse him when he joined Liquigas. But it is Pellizotti, shown here, who is riding brilliantly.
There were predictions that Di Luca could lose as much as 5 minutes today. He lost about 2 and remains solidly in the hunt.
Menchov was ahead at every check point.
The Giro has a new leader. He'll probably have little trouble defending his lead on tomorrow's flattish stage. But he'll surely come under real pressure on stage 14. Is his team, now minus Horillo, up to the task of defending him?
