Story of the Tour de France

2009 Giro D'Italia
May 9 - May 31, 2009

May 14, Thursday: Photos from Stage 6, Bressanon/Brixen - Mayrhofen (Austria), 242 km.

Here is the break on the Felbertauern from which Scarponi emerged victorious. From the left, Oscar Gatto, Scarponi in the foreground. Hidden behind him is Vasili Kiryienka. Then Kasper Klostergaard (Saxo) and Guillame Bonnafond (Ag2R).
Scarponi eventually lost all the others. Here he is descending the Hochkrimml.
Kiryienka's hot on his heels, but is suffering from cramps and can't stay with Scarponi. He was caught a few kilometers before the finish.
The Maglia Rosa group was a couple of minutes back. They waited too long to try to shut the break down. Scarponi's lead in the break is no longer a threat to Di Luca, here in pink.
Armstrong (black sox, yellow bike) was a little further behind.
Garzelli had tried his luck on the Hochkrimml but even though he's down on GC, being a former Giro winner, he was too much of a threat to be allowed any freedom.
Michele Scarponi takes a well-deserved solo victory
And Edvald Boasson Hagen takes the field sprint.
