Story of the Tour de France

2009 Giro D'Italia
May 9 - May 31, 2009

May 13, Wednesday: Photos from Stage 5, San Martino di Castrozza - Alpe di Siusi, 125 km.

When the last climb started to really bite and Basso was at the front hammering, Armstrong (black sox) had to let go. Looks like he had plenty of teammates to get him home.
A smiling Basso seemed to making Di Luca, right on his wheel, miserable. Eventual stage winner Menchov is on the left in orange. The idiot on the left with the horns has written, "No, I'm not crazy" on his chest. He's wrong.
This should have been climbing specialist Gilberto Simoni's day. He struggled a bit, losing 47 seconds.
It was worse for Cunego who really planned to make a splash in this year's Giro. He lost 2min 39sec
Spring hasn't come to the high mountains yet.
Sastre tried to sneak away but Menchov was having none of it. He flew by with Di Luca (in green here) on his wheel, clearly the strongest man of the day.
