The pack wasn't far behind Barredo and Kreuziger as they started their sprint.

The technical descents and wet weather spelled trouble. More than a few riders crashed, including Linus Gerdemann and Oscar Freire. Here Andy Schleck gets help after falling.

Alejandro Valverde (black and red kit) leads the pack in the rain. That's Serguei Ivanov, the Russian Champion, just to his right. Valverde, the number 1 favorite going in to the race, missed this one.
