Milano - San Remo (World Cup)

Saturday, March 20, 2004

Podium History of Milano-San Remo

World Cup Round 1, 294 km.

A huge, fantastic field of riders, many in excellent form, will be there for "La Primavera".

Among those scheduled to ride: Bettini, Vinokourov, Zabel, Freire, Dekker, Petacchi, Cipollini, Vandenbrouke, Astarloa, Van Petegem, Rebellin, O'Grady, McEwen, Brochard, Baldato, Miller, Cooke, McGee, Hondo, Vainsteins, Svorada, Popovych, de Galdeano, Camenzind, Di Luca, Celestino, Julich, Voigt, Bartoli, Van Heeswijk.

The race:

A break of 5 including Ludo Dierckxsens was away for about 200 km, but were caught with 21 km to go. So it was set up for a drag race on the Via Roma in San Remo. Bettini tried to get away on the Poggio (of course), but was caught on the descent. At the line, Zabel thought he had it and took his hands off the bars for a victory salute. But, the wily and quick Freire dinged him by inches when he threw his bike across the line.
